A priori, the brain can't function properly when it's malnourished. It appears that Daniel Bates' brain has been malnourished because it certainly doesn't appear to function properly.

Aren't ketones just a product of fat breakdown - is there a way to lose fat and NOT have ketosis? How would you lose it otherwise (whether it's showing up on the strips or not?)

I think Gary Taubes should make that the topic of his next book... "How to be a successful, rigorous scientific journalist"

Jeez. Adding white bread in maintenance phase so that "this time" it's healthy. What a crock.

As far as I know, Atkins was only 'clinically obese' after his admission to hospital because of organ failure resulting in the swelling up of his body - hence his huge post mortem weight.

I believe Atkins was clinically obese much earlier, which led to him researching weight loss methods and trying the original weight loss diet -- low carb -- and converting it into very low carb.

Girl-- you are right.

Atkins' weight gain during his coma was a direct result of his organs shutting down.

I tend to agree...no doctor would ever have been that interested in weight loss unless they had a personal interest. He ate what he prescribed...and he ate it to lose weight.
This has little to do with the water weight he gained when in a coma.

At the time his diet first came out, all the MDs I went to for diet, just gave me diet meds. and they were all thin. One guy gave me Tenuates...another gave me these drops that were essentially speed in a bottle!

This is from The Daily Mail, folks. It's a crap Brit tabloid and they haven't gotten anything right for years. This is a very good example of the kind of junk they print. Just pathetic.

"The Daily Mail - many people prefer it to a real newspaper."

The DM won't accept any criticism either. I tried to contact the journalist - he wasn't available - I tried to leave a comment - rejected - I tried to leave an email message - incorrect email addy given (deliberately I suspect) - you can't telephone, they don't accept personal calls. If we can't tell these jouranlists that they have made a mistake, how on earth can we get them to print accurate facts. People who are considering Atkins will now swan off and try and do it with wrong information and when they fail, it will be the plan to blame, not themselves or the bad information they were given. Makes me sick and I read the DM every day.
