Hi Gawdess,
I've been there too. In fact, I just passed the five-year mark in July (woohoo). Gawdess, I was seriously addicted to nicotine and it was the hardest thing I ever did in my life. But I DID IT! And I know that if I can do it, you can do it too.
Along the way I learned a lot...about nicotine addiction, and about my own self. Once you start down the path to a smoke-free life, you will encounter many triumphs as well as many hurdles. It is a discovery process!
There are a lot of great people over at alt.support.stop-smoking who will walk the walk with you. Good luck, and if you need any reinforcements, you can email me at nocarbs~emailuser.net, or you can post in my journal. I will try to help you in any way I can.
BTW, if you are concerned about weight gain, wear the patch. Nicotine does influence metabolism a little and studies show that people who wear the patch have a lower amount of weight gain than those who don't. Go girl, you can beat this!
