Question Ladies, any changes in menstrual cylce?

Hi Everyone,

When you first started LCing, did you notice any changes in your menstrual cycle? In its timing, or length for example?

This is my first month on LC, and while there are no problems with the timing, a 10-day length for one's period is a bit much.

Any input would be much apperciated.

Eliza

It's very common. Your body will adjust within a few months, and things will most likely return to their regular schedule.

I had my period right before I started, and then a few days later (while on Induction) I was spotting for almost five days, had very mild cramps, etc. I had a couple of high carb days because of my bday and the spotting stopped, but I'm back on Induction and am feeling crampy again, though no spotting just quite yet. So, yeah, all over the place.

Kisal and SaraSimone,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Yes, there was this weird spotting. I am calmer now knowing this is not unusual when starting LC.

Thanks again and have a great weekend:
Eliza

Well, there's definitely weird stuff happening. I'm long past menopause, but since I've been low-carbing, I've been dreaming about my period starting.

I believe female hormones are stored in fat cells and they must be released with weight loss or maybe just low carb weight loss. I don't know. I do know that although I hadn't had a period in years, when I started low carbing (5 years ago) I had a very long heavy period. I haven't had anything since.

Question Lower dose of BHRT?

Thank you so much for asking this question, Eliza, and thanks to everyone else for their responses! Very helpful.

I'm on week five of LC, and have had some strange issues, too--spotting and an early period. I'm on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) though, and wondered if that could be a factor. Especially as I've been having unusual side effects. I will be talking to my Nurse Practitioner about this soon.

Has anyone here been able to lower their BHRT doses as a result of LC?

This is the only thread I've found, thus far, which mentions bioidentical hormones:

Do you have PCOS? There's an entire forum about it here.

Yes, I too, did have a very huge TOM after missing several periods prior, a couple of months after I began eating this way 5 years ago. I was 54( peri) at the time and have since been in menopause.

Estrogen is stored in the fat cells and when we lose that fat, it releases the stored estrogen with it. That is when we'll see extra time bleeding and shorter cycles.
In time, it all gets balanced out BUT, if you are feeling insecure, you really should discuss this with your medical person, NP or MD.

I've always had regular periods (even before LC)... I was always generally "on-time" but as we all know our cycles don't exactly work on a perfect 28 day so I would sometimes be a bit late.... well, for like the first 3-4 months on Atkins my period would come SUPER punctual, to the day, like if I was on the pill! That finally went away... I'm still semi-punctual.

Nope, I don't have PCOS. But I have PMS, so the forum has some helpful information for me.

Bump.

Just wanted to add: I'm way past menopause, but I just recently finished about a week of light spotting and light cramping. (I had no idea how expensive tampons have gotten!) So all sorts of strange things do happen when the released estrogen goes out with a bang.

I just had my second LC period this time around. Earlier I've written that my periods on LC are very heavy, almost painless, and over quickly. Not so this time. The bleed has been very heavy again, but terrible cramps the first day, enough to make me consider going home from work, using a sick day. It takes some doing to make me do that.

But I've been fat since before menarche, so there will be quite a lot of estrogen and other stuff stored!
