The other symptoms they generally look for are problems with weight gain that shouldn't be there, blood pressure issues, cholesterol issues, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), some skin issues, etcetera.
In my case, they kept just looking at my weight and telling me "eat less, exercise more" and basically telling me I was lying about what I was eating and how much I was working out, which is depressing. The hair growth they were attributing to post-partum hormone readjustment. They attributed the high cholesterol and blood pressure to my weight. UNTIL they saw the cysts, then my other symptoms were reevaluated. So again I say, make them look at you as a whole person. Generally, what they will do is a glucose tolerance test to see if you're insulin resistant, and an ultrasound to check your ovaries for cysts. Then there can be some other testing to see what the best treatment is going to be. I didn't get that far because I caught pregnant.
