I have seen references to it, but I have never seen it in the stores. Is it just another artificial sweetner?

Stevia is a natural herbal extract with an intense sweet taste. It has the teeniest trace of calories and carbs. You will not find it in grocery or department stores with other sugars or artificial sweeteners, because it's classifed by the FDA as a supplement (just like other herbal medicines) not a sweetener or food. You are most likely to find it in a health food store.
