Default Keto diet for children safe long term...

Not long ago on this forum I read something about a keto diet being considered "child abuse". Sorry, I can't remember the thread. But I stumbled across this article today and thought it was worth posting...

Thanks for posting this. We have an almost 5 yr old DS who has a seizure disorder. We have been considering this diet for him. Next month we have an appointment with his Neurologist to see if she will help us get him on the diet and monitor him through out. He was brain injured at birth and as a result of that, has Cerebral Palsy, seizure disorder, cortical visual impairment, is hearing impaired, and is G-tube fed. Since he is fed through a tube it will be simple to control and monitor his food. I'm going to print this out and show it to her.

I dunno. It's good news but see this:
Quote:
The ketogenic diet, consisting of high-fat foods and very few carbohydrates, is believed to trigger biochemical changes that eliminate seizure-causing short circuits in the brain's signaling system. Used as first-line therapy for infantile spasms and in children whose seizures cannot be controlled with drugs, the diet is highly effective but complicated and sometimes difficult to maintain. It can temporarily raise cholesterol, impair growth and, in rare cases, lead to kidney stones, among other side effects.

It does not temporarily raise cholesterol. Sugar does that. It does not impair growth. Sugar does that. It does not lead to kidney stones. Sugar does that. It does not have any other side effects. Sugar does that.
Quote:
During interviews, none of the patients reported adverse cardiovascular side effects such as heart attacks, enlargement of the heart or abnormal plaque buildup in their arteries. One patient reported having high blood pressure.

Again, sugar does all the above. If the heart (and all other tissues for that matter) uses ketones, it becomes more efficient by about 30%. How would that lead to an enlarged heart? On the contrary, it would lead to a smaller but stronger heart.
Quote:
None of the 25 patients who had liver and kidney function tests had abnormal results. Among the 26 patients who had their cholesterol tested, the average level was 157 milligrams per deciliter of blood (less than 200 is considered normal), with three of the 26 having abnormal levels. Most patients' cholesterol levels go up while on the diet, but are believed to return to normal thereafter. The Hopkins study now confirms that this is the case.

But triglycerides go down on the keto diet then go back up as more sugar is added back in the diet after "treatment". Cholesterol goes back down to "normal" as well because of the LDL shrinkage.
Quote:
"We have every reason to believe that most children will start catching up once they are off the diet as they grow up because this is what we see in older former patients," Kossoff says.

I have every reason to believe that once they quit the keto diet and go back to a high carb diet, they'll grow fat, sick, weak and stupid. Maybe that's what they mean by "catching up". "I'm healthy now but wait a while and I'll be just like all the other kids."
