Default Vacation Worries

I should be real excited because I get to see my brother, my nephew and my Mom...plus go to Las Vegas (home of free booze and fabulous food) for 5 days.

We will be gone for 2 1/2 weeks and I will not be able to stick to my very rigid exercise and eating schedule. Plus I will be with 2 people who are not dieting (and don't need to).

My problem: I don't want to be a pain in the ass to be with, BUT...I will be real unhappy if my BG goes up. So, what to do?

We will be spending a lot of time in the car. I am going to take a cooler. The hotel rooms will have a refrigerator. My Mom has a pool and an eclip-trainer. These are the pluses.

These guys eat late. I won't be able to exercise the days we spend "on the road". We are going to Mexico too. So, do I just eat an Atkins bar at 6-7pm....my food cut-off time for the day...and have a glass of wine while they eat? Should I make breakfast (the one meal I can control...timewise) my biggest meal...but 6g? Should I just eat Atkins bars, nuts, etc all day and skip large meals?

Any suggestions would be very helpful! Hopefully, someone out there has traveled a lot and will have some pointers. I am most concerned with the days I won't be around exercise equipment. I count on it after dinner to get BG back into the 90's.

Thank you all for all your help!

When I'm on vacation, I only rarely have problems finding meals that are not on my plan or cannot be modified to fit my plan even at cafeteria style places.
I take along protein shake mixes, Atkins bars, Slim Jims, macadamia nuts, cheese sticks and such for when there are no options for me. At the very worst I have wound up eating quite a few salads with chopped egg and cheese but at least I was able to keep on plan.
Having your eating and exercise schedule messed up poses a whole other set of problems. Would it be possible for you to at least take a walk at some point in the day? Any excercise is better than none at all. Many hotels also have exercise rooms, so that may be an option as well. As for the schedule, the bars, nuts, string cheese, meat sticks, etc...should be able to keep you somewhat on schedule and when everyone else is eating, you could still have a salad or just drink water.
If you are still taking the Metformin, I'd advise to be very careful with alcohol consumption as the two together can produce a very dangerous condition called lactic acidosis.

Thanks Lisa! Those are great tips! I guess I will be doing a lot of walking. The casinos are so large that I could go round and round a few times. I'll check on the gym at the hotels, that would be nice. But I am doubting it...especially in Mexico.

I had to cut out the Metformin last Tuesday because my BG dropped to 68 at the gym (I felt dreadful) .. I actually checked BG in the parking lot. Passers by probably thought I was doing something foul, but who cares!

Anyway, I seem to be okay without it. I am eating very small amounts at set times in the day....that seems to make all the difference. Plus, I have shifted my workout to after dunner..or after lunch AND dinner. Morning BG's are the lowest ever....under 110 for a week!

I am mostly concerned with being up til 3or 4 in the morning and getting off my schedule....wow...do I sound old or what? To be honest...this is the first "self-imposed" schedule I have ever been on...and I really like it!

I will report back when I am near a computer again. Have a safe and Happy 4th of July if I don't get back on before then!

I've found some surpisingly low carb things to eat while traveling:

Wendy's: 1) Order a triple with cheese (no, you don't want the combo, just the sandwich) no ketchup, no mustard. Ask them to put the cheese slices in between the hamburger patties so that it doesn't touch the bun. Throw away the bun. Grab a knife and fork and enjoy. Between the pickles, onions, thin slice of tomato and the lettuce, there can't be more than 3 grams of carbohydrate or so in it. 2) Chicken BLT salad. Ask for Ranch dressing (high fat, not the Lite which has about double the carbs). The entire packet of dressing is only 5 grams. The whole salad with dressing is about 10 grams.

McDonald's: the Chicken Caesar salad without croutons.

Outback Steak house: sheer heaven for low carbers. Get a ribeye with a caesar salad (no croutons) to start and make your vegetable the broccoli and cauliflower. As close to zero carbs as you can get with enough fiber to last until the next ice age.

Hooters (yeah, I know, but they're very diabetic friendly): Get the Texas Steak Sandwich and throw away the bread. This is a nice little ribeye with sauted green peppers and onions (not caramelized) with cheddar cheese melted on it. Warning: don't eat the cole slaw as it's loaded with sugar. Their chicken caesar salad makes a nice meal, too and is very low carb.

One other essential, whether travelling or at home: keep a box of stevia packets in the glove compartment of your car. No matter where you are you'll be able to sweeten your iced tea.
