You may want to look into "elimination communication." We've been part time EC'ing with our little guy since he was about 2 months old; EC is such a great tool that it can be started at any age. The concepts are different than traditional "potty training." I think that babywearing has been the one biggest help with us EC'ing.

I really liked Ingrid Bauer's book Diaper Free: The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene.

DiaperFreeBaby is a great online resource to get started with, and there is a whole sub-forum devoted to EC over at mothering.com.

Taking your little ones on a camping trip like that sounds great! And being in the great out-of-doors seems like a wonderful opportunity to begin EC. Good luck
