I've had tinnitus since I was in my early to mid 20s & I didn't have diabetes then. It wasn't bad then, but certainly is now! I've not found anything helpful except simply accepting it.
While my usual sound is a high-pitched squeal, I've occasionally this last year had 2 new sounds: one sounds like someone marching heavily, the other is a rhythmic whooshing sound. I finally figured out that I'm probably hearing my heartbeat. But it's still a bit upsetting when I wake in the middle of the night hearing someone tromping back & forth in the living room!
Other than the tinnitus, my hearing is pretty good.
Janet - my sister had a virus a few years ago that left her deaf in one ear. I'll have to ask her if she also has tinnitus - it's never come up in conversation.
