It occurred to me that the study didn't test diets, but diet books. Diet books are instruction books. If the instructions are badly written, then compliance will be worse, and results will be worse. If the instructions are well written, compliance will be better, and results will be better.

If we combine both well written instructions, and appropriate instructions (in this case low carb), then we won't just see better results, we'll see best results. I remember when I read Atkins and I thought it was poorly written. When I read GCBC I thought it was well written but it wasn't an instruction book yet I got more instructions from it than from Atkins. This is a testament to the effectiveness and science of low carb, but it doesn't put the Atkins book in a very good light. I'm just saying that if the same Atkins diet book was (re)written as well as any other good instruction book, then it would produce even better results than it already does.
