If you haven't already, have a read of the likes of Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes and/or The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz. Stories abound of science being treated like a sort of fashion among scientists, where you'd be shunned for daring to openly subscribe to any dietary theory other than what was commonly believed at the time.
