Kelly mentioned something that might be a good idea... if you were to both wear heart rate monitors, he would be able to see that your pace of walking is raising your heart rate as much as his running.

I also like the idea of him running ahead and then coming back to meet you as a way of going together, but him being able to work at a higher intensity.
