Default Nutritional contents of the food database

This thread can be used for discussion related to the nutritional contents of our food database.

Currently, the database is an exact copy of the latest USDA, SR-17, database:

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

It contains just under 7,000 food items.

As members can add their own custom food items into the database, we plan to merge those entries into the database, so others can use them as well.

Some have commented on the lack of items like "bunless burgers" and/or other low-carb items. If members start entering those as custom foods, we can make them available to all members, and eventually our database will be quite sufficiently populated with items of particular interest to low-carbers.

We'll soon add a link to recipes and custom items called "Publish", which means it will request the item be added for everyone to use.

We will also have recipe and content administrators to receive those requests and review them for approval. This is necessary to ensure the the data is accurate and correct.

Recipe and content admins will be volunteer users, who have the skills to validate nutritional data. For example, to calculate and validate a "bun-less burger", they can subtract the nutritional data of bread, from the total of hamburger, to arrive at an accurate count. This can be aided by the tool itself, which allows subtraction of ingredients.

They may also volunteer to add specific groups of items, like entering data from a restaurant chain, etc.

If you have any additional suggestions or ideas, please share.
