UK Atkins followers?

Is there many on these boards?

I've been struggling to find items suggested by people who live in America, and I was wondering if there are any UK alternatives?

:help:

Which items are you actually looking for?

Hi i am in the Uk and an avid fan of the atkins diet. In the past i bought goods from various online lowcarb stores or visited local health shops for things like coconut oil, spi powder, soya flour etc..( i used soya flour to make pancakes) YOu can buy carb free maple syrup from these online stores which is pretty good on pancakes.
this time around, i am trying not to use these items in my diet and have succeeded a little better than before/ I try to keep it between 25 and 30 carbs a day with the odd glass of alcohol.
I found buying too many sweet things didnt do me much good as it just kept my craving high so.... i try to keep to eating mainly eggs meat veg salads and cream with a few nuts and cheese or berries. One thing i did find from the lowcarb store which i do use is unsweetened cocoa powder which i mix with cream cheese and splenda for when i have a craving for something sweet or i use the unsweetened peanut butter which i love on cos or romaine lettuce leaves! believe me that is so nice! but without knowing what it is you are looking for its hard for me to suggest anything else you might want to try

I'm in the UK (West Yorks). What is it you are looking for?

Elizellen Tue, Nov-15-11 16:48

I'm down in Dorset in Bournemouth!

As the others have already said, post details of what you are looking for and I am sure someone will be able to help.

BTW there are quite a few of us UK members around the board.

Hi, not had internet access for a few days, so apologies for my lack of response !

I'm in the East Midlands.

I'm looking for everything and anything :D

The sweet stuff sounds good... I'm trying to wean myself off the sweet stuff but I want to have things in the cupboard ready for when I cannot resist something sweet so that I eat something that wont throw me off rather than going for the brioche in the childrens cupboard :)

Anything to make my life easier, I'm a single mum to 2 girls under 3 so life is really chaotic some days and things in the cupboard to make sauces etc with when I'm having a long day !

You can find a lot of LC junk food and artificially sweetened syrups and things like that here.

"Things to make sauces" that you mention, you really will be best off cooking from whole foods and from scratch. Stock up on pestos, tinned tomatoes or jarred passatas and double cream for your sauces, etc.

Xylitol is available at Holland and Barratt and all good health food/organic food stores, almond flour is readily available in the baking section in most supermarkets (for breading/frying/cake making), unsweetened cocoa powder also from your regular supermarket will mean that you can make some of your own, healthy treats.. sweetened with something less toxic for you and your family than Splenda.

Good luck!

I have a cupboard full of tinned tomatoes, passata and pesto, wasn't sure how much of it I could eat being in my 3rd week of OWL? I've also been using single cream for cheese sauce (NOM) and I loooove it, so much easier than faffing making a rue :D

I've been using flax seed for MIM, is that okay to be eating once a day?

I really want to get off the sweetener in tea and coffee, I've always brought no added sugar fruit juices (dilute ones) but I'm assuming they have sweetener in too.. I'm just not and never have been a big fan of drinking plain water - green tea makes me hurl - I occasionally buy a Pepsi Max or a Coke Zero, probably only once or twice a month tho as it makes me bloat.

So, according to ASDA online shopping, unsweetened cocoa powder doesn't exist.

Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder (30%) , Whey Powder (from Cow's Milk) , Dried Glucose Syrup , Maltodextrin , Vegetable Fat , Soluble Maize Fibre , Stabilisers: Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose, Disodium Phosphate, Sodium Polyphosphate , Plain Chocolate Flakes* (2%) (Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Powder) , Salt , Natural Flavourings , Lactose (from Cow's Milk) , Milk Proteins , Sweetener: Sucralose , Emulsifier: Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids , Anticaking Agent: Tricalcium Phosphate , *Chocolate contains 48% Cocoa Solids .

Thats the ingredients for the Weight Watchers powder.

Okay I am not finding anything that is suitable.

As I move further up the ladder I am getting more and more confused about what I can and can't eat. I can't find any LC products in ASDA or Tesco. Must admit this is really frustrating me.

honeypie Wed, Nov-16-11 15:20

Sorry this is short but I'm on the run.... you might find it easier if you just look for whole, natural products, and not necessarily "LC" or diet labeled ones.

Cadbury's and Green & Blacks both make plain, unsweetened cocoa powder, for instance.

Also, do you have an Atkins book that you have read through completely, and that you can refer back to?

This will be your BEST ally, by far

Elizellen Wed, Nov-16-11 16:01

I agree with honeypie, ignore anything labelled lowfat or weightwatchers or other "diet" foods (including special "lowcarb" processed bars etc) and look at labels for the list of ingredients and you should find some possibilities.

Meat, seafood, eggs, cream, most cheeses, a raft of allowed veggies, butter, oils and some spices are really all that we need to eat lowcarb.

There is sugar free werthers caramels, you can find them in sainsburys and morrisons, or even online..
But don't eat the whole lot once, it will mess up your stomack. I only have one ocassionally after meal :)

Also afer induction phase when you can start eating nuts, try salted macadamia nuts, most of shops have them. I try have 12 nuts a day, I split the bag in proporsion, as you can otherwise easily forget and eat the whole bag.
