What's wrong with me? Prescribed glucophage

Okay, here's my story. I'm not really trying to lose weight, I've just had some odd things happening for awhile. I would like to tell my story and see if anyone understands/has advice

I'm 20 and a junior in college. I've been on the pill since I was 14. I started school in August weighing about 187 (a weight that had been stable for 4-5 years). I'm 5'3. Sounds like a lot but I'm built solidly and I'm usually okay with how I look. So turns out I had a hard time with my living situation and dropped to about 170 from September to November (I was so upset I couldn't eat much). I went home in December and was upset that my boobs looked small and saggy (they were 38DDDs in August and my bras are baggy. I suspect I'm a DD now). This is about the same time I started to notice hair loss. This worsened in Feburary so I started seeing doctors. They noticed my testosterone was a little higher than normal and I kept getting referred to other doctors. I got home May 21st. I went to a doctor 12 days ago (May 25). I weighed 177, a little disappointing but I figured it was natural since I've been eating more. He told me to go to a gyno. Today, June 6th, I saw my regular doctor. He told me I probably have PCOS (others had said the same) and prescribed GLUCOPHAGE. I was hardly listening because I was bawling about my weight- 183!!! NEVER have I gained anything like 6 pounds in 12 days. After the May 25th appointment, I'd started doing cardio and eating better so I was shocked.

Also, the hair loss started leveling off in April but has come back in the two weeks I've been home, hence why I've been seeing doctors.

So, what I want to know is will the glucophage help my hair loss (which is what the dr. prescribed it for). This crazy weight thing- what could it be? How long is good to take it? I wasn't really looking for weight loss, but after seeing this 6 pound increase, I've panicked. I'm afraid I'll be 250 and it will be out of my control. Thanks a million to anyone who replies

Hi. PCOS can cause hair loss and weight gain among other things. Sounds like you've caught it early. Glucophage is the best thing to be on for the symptoms of PCOS. The other thing to do is to be strict about low carb and stay away from dairy, which exacerbates the symptoms of PCOS.

PCOS although named for cysts on the ovaries is actually caused by excess insulin and insulin resistance. The insulin acts on the ovaries causing too many androgens to be produced and causes symptoms such as weight gain, hirsutism, hair loss, acne, fertility problems etc

You may need to take glucophage long term - PCOS can't be cured, it just can just be held at bay with proper management.

I've had PCOS for 27 years but only got the proper treatment this year.

Hope that helps

Leemack is spot on. Your wait gain after following a healthy diet, is likely caused by your diet. Most people think lowering fat levels and eating more bread and fruit is healthy. For someone with insulin issues, going on a diet like that can make you gain very quickly.
