Kathy54 from there to here

My journey started in Jan of this year, after seeing a news report that the American Heart Assco.had second thoughts about the Atkins diet. They did a comparison with their own diet and the Atkins diet, they found the Atkins patients faired better in lowering, Chol/B.P./weight loss.

So I went out and bought the new book. Now I must tell you I have never followed a diet before, other than, Fit for life for 3 weeks, I did lose some weight, but could not "live" with the diet on a regular basis. So from there I just continued to grow............... So when I bought the book, I weighed 180 #'s, now, I know for some, 180 are not huge, but for me it was. After all, after my last baby I was 128 #'s

Anyhow, Before I started Low carb'n, I went to the doctor, which I advise anyone, (however be prepared for a negative response) I had all my blood work done. And yes he wanted me to lose weight. My sugars were getting high, a risk for Diabetes, my bad Chol was O.K. HDl, was low. Blood Pressure getting high.

He didn?t really say nay or yay about Atkins. So 3 months later I returned, at that time 25 pounds lighter and feeling great! Had the test done over again, Bad Chol was lower, hdl was higher, Sugars way lower. B.P. is down somewhat, but I continue to take a water pill once a day, that keeps it in check.

I have truly taken this on as a way of life, not a diet. I feel great, now at my goal weight of 140. I no longer have heart burn, I can count on one hand the number of times I have burped or tooted!! Since Jan. Hubby will testify to that LOL.

I am at the point in this way of eating (since about may) that I can now have a slice of good whole grain bread 3x's a week, small portions of potatoes 2x's a week with no weight gain. I eat fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, melons, peaches, apricots, 3 serving a day, a salad everyday, which when I don't have it, my body craves like mad. The protein I eat, tends to be on the lean side, lot's of turkey/chicken/lamb/fish and lean beef/ very little bacon or sausage (no nitrate only).

The above was written for another forum on July 15 th 03, (accept I reached my goal at the end of Aug so I edited that) 8>) I continue to stay at 138-140 and that is just fine with me. We have a huge Christmas season coming here, my brother and his family are coming from Australia, I have sworn the whole family to secrecy, I can not wait to see his reaction, he was always very subtle, but a bit of a nag about my weight. So my ongoing goal is to stay in my buffer zone so to speak 137-140. I truly believe that at this stage it is all about "Control over servings", plain and simple 8>)

Thanks so much to everyone that spends the time on this, "World Class Forum" I never would of got to where I am with out it.

I'll attached two pics here, the first is about day 4 of Atkins, sorry I don?t have one of just me.
The second was taken just last weekend. For a full length B/A pic's Post # 406 in my journal. Cheers Kathy

Great job Kathy! I know I had a lot of fun at my family reunion this year. I had lost nearly 40 pounds and everyone was surprised. Have fun!

WTG, Kathy! I hope you'll be sticking around the forum. I like your posts.

Great pictures! It would be nice if you could get one of your brother's face when his chin hits the floor. ;)

Congratulations and much good health!

Great and inspirational story!! The fact that you eat so well and versified, (I read your journal), is testimony that one can add back fruits and whole grain bread in moderation! Keep up the good work!! And Thanks for sharing!!!

Kathy54, what I find motivating about your story is all those weeks you didn't lose but you stuck with it and ended up at goal. You eat so healthy, maybe by next spring I'll be able to indulge in some fruit too.

Brilliant success, Kathy. Thanks for sharing. If you have any advice on those "last 10 or 15 pounds", i'd really appreciate it. I know I'm getting more muscular/fit, but am feeling a bit frustrated to be stuck at the same place for so long.

thanks also for the ideas on rhubarb! :)

It's a bit overdue, but thought I'd post here since I have passed my 2nd anniversary of low carbing, which marks 18 months of maintaining.

I maintain a weight of 135 to 138 with no problem :)
