Great article on DietDoctor!

This section in particular appears to be influenced by Dr. Westman. In the clinic, for patients with a History of Gout....

As a bonus, these lifestyle modifications have many other positive effects on weight and health. However, if they are not enough, the drug allopurinol is highly effective in preventing gout.8

Given that there may be a temporary rise in uric acid during the first few weeks on a strict low carb diet, people who’ve previously had troublesome gout attacks may want to consider using the drug allopurinol while starting low carb, starting taking the drug at least a week in advance, to minimize any risk of a new gout attack.

If she is eating carbs my suggestion would be to get off of them, replace it with vegetables to lower the acid load.

Was gout addressed in Wheat Belly ?? He discussed the blood pH, but dont recall anything on gout. I still have book and will report back.

reading Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free by Victor Konshin. Also watching his videos:

Author of 'Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free' Interviewed Part 1

Author of 'Beating Gout: A Sufferer's Guide to Living Pain Free' Interviewed Part 2

ok, so in the video part 1, around 3:18, he says about gout prevention:

cut back on beer
lose weight
stay away from hfcs

my wife doesn't drink alcohol, has never had a sweet tooth, and is below the obesity BMI - though she is overweight. i'm reading the book, but don't see initially anything earth shattering that she can do to stop these gout attacks on her foot.

the only thing that i can think of is for her to go completely lchf, which i don't see happening. she has cut carbs a lot ( mostly rice! ) and as i've posted elsewhere, her A1C at her latest type 2 diabetes appointment fell from 6.4 to 6.1. it was 6.7, before that - so she's headed in the right direction.

Sometimes removing the carbs from the diet can be a slow determined process. BY providing a substitute for a favored item, and then phasing out that item.
What little I have read of gout, it is a tricky bugger to manage. It is one bugger I have prayed to avoid, more than cancer.

Im sure you will find the answers you are looking for, as you wont stop searching until you do.

She's overweight and A1c is still over 6...an indication of still high insulin levels? If she won't go LCHF, what about adding Intermittent Fasting?

Amy Berger's new talk on insulin.

IF? I'm trying. I tried first with TRE, getting her to write down every time she eats - while stating that long breaks between meals is good - especially between the last meal of the day to the first.

Are you sure it's gout and not a kidney problem with fluid retention?
Has she been diagnosed by a doctor?

GRB5111 Fri, Nov-30-18 19:18

Gout article by Dr. Georgia Ede is excellent.
