They are putting sugar in EVERYTHING now

I just dumped a whole bottle of salad dressing down the drain. This is a brand I have bought before, so I didn’t read the ingredients, and it had one of those plastic wrappers around it. When I tore that off, I noticed it looked kinda... syrupy.

And no wonder! The ingredients read “Water, sugar,” and I didn’t get any further. In a red wine vinagrette, no less.

I was especially angry because I had picked up a containter of chai concentrate, and it wasn’t until I got home that I discovered that this one was LOADED with sugar as well. At least I didn’t open it, and I can return it.

Always read the label.

Are they trying to make sugar addicts of us all?

Yes! They are trying to make us all sugar attics, they're putting it everywhere it shouldn't be. It's constant being on alert for the infused poison in almost everything in the grocery store.

Don't even get me started with the cooking shows.

I too have tripped up on trusted products. Sugar is cheap and the low fat cult still reigns. Sorry your old reliable brand is a traitor-- it is all about $$$$$.

Given the few options for dressing, I have tried makeing homemade options. Not always practical though. Most recent is kombucka ( ginger cranberry) and olive oil. It is naturally a bit sweet but fermented.

The only times I have ever bought salad dressing was when DH "required" Thousand Island, and I couldn't see making it just for him. After changing my own way of eating, I am working subtly on his, and now I do make his chosen dressing types. Salad dressing was one of the first things I learned to do in the kitchen; it isn't hard, and it doesn't take a lot of time. But yes, definitely, read those labels. You can't depend on them staying the same.

My challenge is that my health status doesn’t allow me the spare energy sometimes. But at least I didn’t ruin my antipasto dinner. I had hemp oil and apple cider vinegar to step in for me.

I have bought salt at the supermarket that had sugar in it, I kid you not. Salt!

It's insidious to the point where there's sugar or sweetener in nearly everything. When my wife and daughter started the Whole 30, they were amazed at how much of an effort it was to find products without sugars. I now make all my salad dressings using a carafe with a shaker top. Real easy, and I control the oils, the vinegar or lemon juice, and seasonings, as most of the store-bought stuff is junk with seed oils, sugars, and chemicals. Having this awareness also gets your attention when eating at restaurants. Most restaurants will use canola, soy, or corn oil in salad dressing masquerading as olive oil. Much cheaper!

This is why I buy almost entirely single ingredient foods, no labels to read, no nasty ingredients to ingest. My preparation techniques are really simple and don't take much time, including making my own salad dressing, but i started doing that decades ago, long before low carb. Of course I only cook for myself so that makes life as simple as it could be.

I started reading the various bottles in my pantry a few months ago when I'd finished reading "The Case Against Sugar" when it first came out. I was horrified to discover that my jar of cook-in "butter chicken" curry sauce had the same percentages of sugar per 100g as my other bottle of generic chocolate sauce that we'd used to pour over ice-cream. Then I read all of my jars and a LOT of them went into the garbage, including those ice-cream toppings. Most of them were 40-50% sugar. Unbelievable.

The amounts of sugar in supermarket yoghurt are horrific. Even plain yoghurt usually has sugar in it. One can argue about how healthy yoghurt is anyway, but sugar certainly doesn't help.

Serving-size yogurt is either flavored with sugar or syrup added or fat-free these days and people think it's "diet yogurt" :(

I read that morton salt had sugar in it and I thought no way. Then I checked.

I wouldn't hesitate to use that salt. We're talking a homeopathic dose of sugar, here. More calcium silicate than sugar.
