i've also heard of parents giving their newborns probiotic powder to help strengthen the gut (i would use a nondairy probiotic). Breastfeeding used to be enough to pass along the healthy bacteria that a newborn needs but now most moms arent carrying healthy flora themselves to be able to pass it along to their babies. (babies are born with sterile guts and need to be 'cultured' to develop the normal array of intestinal flora that they need) |
