Splenda Packet Conversion Chart

Hi Gang,

To save money, I buy all my Splenda in packet form, since Costco carries a box of 700 packets for less than $14. This is the equivalent of 29 cups of granular Splenda. There are only 2.29 cups of Splenda in a box of granular and it retails for US$4.30 per box on the Splenda website (including shipping) which means 29 cups would cost US$54.45. So buying it at Costco saves me a whopping $40 each time!

I hate stopping to do the conversions when I'm using the packets, though, so I came up with this handy dandy conversion chart and thought it might be useful to someone else. So here it is:

Code:
Splenda Conversion Chart 1 C = 16 T = 48 tsp = 24 packets 3/4 C = 12 T = 36 tsp = 18 packets 1/2 C = 8 T = 24 tsp = 12 packets 1/3 C = 5.3T = 16 tsp = 8 packets 1/4 C = 4T = 12 tsp = 6 packets 1/8 C = 2T = 6 tsp = 3 packets 1T = 3 tsp = 1.5 packet

I hope someone finds this information useful. I know it's saved me a lot of forehead furrowing while I'm in the middle of a recipe.

Thank you , thank you , thank you!!! I am always having to stop and think this stuff through. I am making copies of this for my cabinet door and the inside of my recipe book.

Splenda is amazing stuff. When I do have the opportunity to have a drink with friends, and since i want to really watch my carb counts, I make a lime, mint, and vodka drink that I sweeten with Splenda. Thanks for taking the time to do this conversion chart- I've always played it by ear.

Excellent, this is very valuable info. Thanks

THANK YOU!

I was just opening up my packets of Splenda for a jerky recipe and ran here to ask a different question...

what conversions do people use when cooking with Splenda? They advertise that it's a 1:1 conversion, but I usually go with a 1:0.5 conversion of sugar to Splenda. Splenda just seems that much sweeter to me!

shtrdave Sat, Dec-13-03 20:58

The stores around here have Splenda in large bags that say equal to the sweetness of 5lb of sugar. Cost is 9-11 dollars a bag. the next time I go to the store I will have to get exact info.

SHTRDAVE: Just a note that I found Splenda's big big yellow bag to be cheaper at our local Walmart. It is not a Superwalmart but it does carry some grocery items. Its price of $6.38 per bag was much cheaper than the local Safeway grocery price of $8.99. Hope you can find it cheaper. :yay:

Digwig, Thanks for doing the math for us. That will really come in handy. Although I am curious about the 24 pkts = to 1 cup? I must be counting wrong because the many, many times I've made LC Choc peanut butter cups, I used 27 pkts of splenda, which equaled 1/3 cup. Can you set me straight please?

One note on Splenda that I learned here on this forum: The reason there is 1 carb per pkt, vs. no carbs in s/f syrups is because of the fillers in the powder. Interesting!

Happy LC'ing in the new year to you all. Thanks, Digwig for your help!

Hi Annie,

I think I might be able to set you straight if I understand you correctly. If you mean that when you measure 27 pkts of Splenda that you get a total of 1/3 cup of powder I think I know where the issue lies.

Splenda packets and loose Splenda have different sweetening power. The loose Splenda is less sweet than the packets and can be measured in exactly the same way as sugar. So, if you have a recipe that calls for 1/3 C of sugar, you can substitute 1/3 C of loose Splenda for the sugar. However, you can't substitute Splenda packets in exactly the same way, because each Splenda packet has the equivalent sweetening power of 2 tsps of sugar, even though the powder in the packet doesn't equal 2tsps (they add more sucralose to the bulking agents in the packets to make it sweeter). If you read the tiny writing on the back of the packet, it does say 1 packet=2 tsps sugar

Interestingly, I'm a fan of that LC peanut butter cup recipe myself (boy, are they good) and I always add more Splenda than the original recipe calls for, I tend to wing it and go by taste, but I'd be willing to bet I'm adding close to 27 packets myself. I guess you and I just have sweeter teeth than the person who created that recipe. :)

Very handy, dandy indeed! Thanks so much, digwig, for doing the work for us...and for the tip about buying it in bulk!!! I use Sam's and it's about the same price there for the packets...I've balked at spending that much at once...but your figures talked me right into it.

Thanks for setting me straight. I honestly didn't know there was a difference between the packets and the large yellow bag. Hmmmm. Now it all makes sense.

Hugs to you all and if you come up with more good recipes involving CHOCOLATE, send them my way!

Sorry I didn't read this until now--been busy.

Thanks for the conversion chart! It will be very handy.

Oh! I didn't know there was a difference in sweetness between the packet and bulk splenda! Glad I know now! I better print that conversion chart. Thanks!

I just wanted you to know you made making koolaid much easier. I have for a while been making our own sweetened koolaid but the teens say its too bitter. I thought they had too much of a sweet tooth, I was wrong. For a cup of sugar I was only using 12-14 packages of splenda! I was alittle short! :D
