How do you say Grandma in Irish (Gaelic)
 

Hi all, I am from the USA and have posted on your site before. I am of Irish heritage (very very much Irish) and our daughter just found out that she's expecting a baby, she's 5 weeks along. I am looking for the word Grandma in Gaelic. Does anybody know what this word is. I would much appreciate it if you would pass it on to my grandbaby's irish grandma-to-be.

"Seanmhathair" is Irish for grandmother - there's what's called a 'fada' on top of the second 'a' in the word, just a little curved line. It literally means 'old mother' and is pronounced like this: shan- waw - her.

It depends on the dialect. It's either seanmhathair or mathair mhor. With a fada on the o.

If you search the web there is a website to learn galic where you can look up the word and actually hear it said. I am fortunate enough that my parents were both born in Ireland (the most beautiful country in the world) and they can pronounce it for me. I hope the baby gets a nice Irish name!!!
