Healthcare professional low-carb course launches

A new one-day course for healthcare professionals exploring low carb diets in diabetes will held in Bournemouth this autumn.

Titled ‘Low Carb Management of Diabetes’, it will delivered on October 3 by Dr David Cavan, Consultant Endocrinologist and author on self-management books for people with diabetes.

The course is designed for all primary care and specialist health professionals involved in the management of people with diabetes. It will provide the evidence for the effectiveness of a low carb intervention, case studies and practical information on offering low carb as a management option to people with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and type 1 diabetes.

Dr Cavan said: “Most health professionals were trained to recommend a low-fat high carbohydrate diet to people with diabetes. Increasingly, it is recognised that this approach is not always effective. Specialist societies such as the Diabetes UK, the British Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes now recognise that a low carb diet can be an effective option in the management of diabetes.

The day will be facilitated by Dr Cavan, together with two former colleagues from the Bournemouth Diabetes team, Diabetes Specialist Nurse Joan Everett and Specialist Dietitian Sarah Marden.

Dr Cavan added: “They are excellent educators and course facilitators and over many years they have trained hundreds of professionals in various aspects of diabetes management. Between them, they have over fifteen years’ experience in low carb management of diabetes. ”

There will also be an opportunity to talk to people with diabetes who have found that restricting carbohydrates has helped them better manage their condition.

During interactive sessions, the course will cover topics including:
  • What is a low-carb diet?
  • The role of a low carb diet in preventing, managing and reversing type 2 diabetes
  • Adjusting medication on a low carb diet
  • Using a low carb diet in type 1 diabetes
  • How to support people in initiating and maintaining a low carb diet
  • Integrating a low carb diet into your diabetes service
