It costs money to have sewerage management that is effective, and a solvent government to oversee the management.

There are a number of efforts inplace to stop cutting the native forests and use only the currently pastureland, which was carved out of the forests. We too once had mostly grassfed cattle... and something we should strive for again.

I have often wondered how much polution the herds of " buffalo that took days to cross the RR tracks" created in comparison to the herds of beef and dairy cattle today, as well as the human " emissions".....I often hear the cattle industry blamed for the environmental gasses, but never mention of the human contribution, nor the buffalo herds of long ago. Food for thought.

I once read an enlightening article in a Smithsonian or Nat'l Geographic magazine looking at the affects of human population explosion on the land and the environment. The conclusion was that slower development of transforming native populations into citified cultures has better long term health outcomes. Having everything is not the way to go.
