Hi, I'm a Newbie to the LC WOL & I've been lurking in some LC lists for the last week or two so I've picked up some of the lingo. I've been a Type 2 diabetic for 3 yrs,
acid reflux, IBS (recent), allergies, asthma, I'm falling apart at 40+! But there is hope!

About 2 months ago I stumbled upon Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution on the web
and knew that I had found something that would *maybe* work for me. After
devouring the book & DANDR, reading them both 2X, I began my LC lifestyle on Mar 26 2001. Lost 10 lbs the first week (definitely some water) and I was SOLD :D
I love this WOE. For the first time in 15 years I feel some hope that I've found a WOE
that is sustainable over the long-term.

There have been a few stumbles along the way, psyllium husks sent my BG up, as
well as a 2 day "fling" with peanut butter. I & my spoon were out of control for 2
evenings last week. Ouch. I've put the PB out of sight now.

A severe hypoglycmic incident 5 days b4 starting LC prompted me to stop taking
glyburide (OHA) on Day 1. My BG have been okay, not great, however my GP is
pleased with the results. Metformin 3X daily is still part of the regimen.

So, in 5 weeks I've lost 20 lbs & stopped taking that nasty glyberide. Colour me happy

:) :)

Note to the webmaster: I LOVE YOUR SITE!! This is the easiest to read & best
organized of the 5 or so sites I've lurked on. I think I've found my LC buddy home!

Hi Ruth,

Welcome to the board! :D

Our esteemed webmaster Wa'il has put a lot of work into it and it does look great.

I hope you'll find that LC takes care of some of the "falling apart at 40+" stuff. It has helped me immensely.

Keep on posting.

Welcome Ruth,

Yep Wa'il has done a great job. This is my second home :)
I'm 43 and felt like crap prior to this woe...now I feel just wonderful. Keep hanging in there, your loss is great :)

Ruth, welcome aboard. Your numbers look great!

Thanks for the kind words regarding the site, working on it has been a great support for me to meet other low-carbers. You should join us for our Vancouver get togethers?

One more thing, I'll be adding a new Diabetese forum under "Health Issues", we have a few new members with diabetese and it might a good place to share ideas, experiences and educate the rest of us.

hi Ruthie, welcome aboard

Metformin will be really helpful with your lowcarb efforts .. :) .. Unlike the glyburide, which lowers blood sugar by stimulating the pancreas to pump out more insulin (and we know that increased insulin means increased FAT storage), Metformin works by enhancing the effects of insulin, helping the cells take up blood glucose. Thus, less insulin is required, and ultimately less fat is stored.

Just curious about the psyllium husks and the jump in BG?? Were they completely sugar-free? Some types say "plain" or "unflavoured" on the label, but have sugar added anyway. You've got to be a label sleuth, that's for sure! Pure, unsweetened psyllium is not absorbed, so should not be a problem for you.

Oh, and congrats on the lbs. lost so far!

Thanks for the encouragement everybody.

Wa'il, I would be interested in meeting some of my neighbours here in Vancouver.
One can always use more friends! Especially ones who have bought into LC WOL.

Cheers, Ruth

You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. ;)

We post when we go out for coffee in the Local Low-Carbers section. Seems like we do it once a month or so. We even go out for dinner!
