Uric Acid and Metabolic Diesase

This article arrived from Perlmutter this morning. I was stunned!
Uric Acid is a major player in metabolic diseases such as Type II Diabetes and not limited to gout? Who knew?

I know a chapter about uric acid/gout issues in Good Calories, Bad Calories, was left out of an already giant book.

Also, I discovered that in women, gout was more likely to exhibit in the UPPER extremities. Ladies, it might not be arthritis after all.

Especially since gout diagnoses are often missed.

My gout shows up in my feet making walking painful in the extreme

Uric acid and gout are well known - but Type II Diabetes?

Staying on low-carb, especially being in ketosis, lowers uric acid.

I've been running into gout for a couple years ..... embedded in low carb/ keto interviews and in depth discussions posted on YouTube.

It deserves to have it's own focus.

I eat a keto diet >95% of the time and notice that when I indulge in grains or sugar, 35-45 minutes later I get excruciating plantar fasciitis in both feet/shins and similar cramps in my left palm & forearm. It also makes me wonder if peripheral neuropathy with "burning" that some diabetics get is also a result of glucose + uric acid -> nerve pain. The ones I know who suffer from PN all follow the ADA diet, not keto.

So many people recommend tart cherry juice for the prevention of gout attacks. 8 oz has 31 carbs!

For those of us who try to keep our carbs around 20/day - we blow it on cherry juice.

Then - slightly off topic - to avoid tortillas made without grain, their carb count is high too.

Grump grump

I find 1-2 tsp of tart cherry juice does the trick (0.65-1.3g carbs). Sometimes I'll have a second dose, or rarely a third, so <4g carbs total per day. One day is usually long enough to quell my gout symptoms.

I use Tart Cherry in capsule supplement form.

1 gram carbs in 3 capsules, which is my normal dose in the morning if I wake up with angry thumb joints :)
