Useful ANZ Links

Hello everybody.

I thought it might be a good idea to have some useful links all together.

*Nutritional counts (esp carbs!) of Oz products www.dietclub.com.au/foods/

*Recipe unit conversion charts here.

*From Food Standards Australia New Zealand food additive numbers.

And if I can just ask everybody to please enter any great LC-friendly restaurants, local shops or chain stores that have LC products into the Low Carb Yellow Pages. These can be found under "Tools" on the top green menu bar. We should be able to build up a good Aus/NZ database of products and places.

Of course, please add any other links you can think of.

:rose:Rosebud:rose:

Rosebud Mon, May-27-02 17:00

The last unit conversion link I had here was no longer working, so I hope this link to Conversion and Ingredient Tables lasts a little longer.

And for the Enzeders... Low Carb NZ has loads of NZ product information along with lots of other helpful info.

Adding to Yellow pages

Hi,
I tried a couple of times yesterday to add some items to the yellow pages without success. I got a message saying "data incomplete" Can anyone help, I am obviously doing someting wrong,

Cheers Lyn Williams

Rosebud Sun, Jun-08-03 20:26

Hi Lyn,

All I can imagine is that you have left one of the spaces empty. Have you tried again?
Your entry won't appear straight away, because the webmaster checks them all first. That's because at first some idiots decided that would be a great way to cause trouble by making inappropriate entries.

Yellow pages

Hi Rosebud,
I tried again tonight to put the information in the yellow pages without success. I get the same message "data incomplete" The only box I left blank was the country because there was no way of choosing Australia, it wasn't listed to choose. I thought it shouldn't matter as it was optional. So if you have any more suggestions?

Cheers Lyn

Rosebud Wed, Jun-11-03 15:09

G'day Lyn,

Have another look matey. The only optional choices are province/state, which only apply to the US and Canada, and your name.
Country is at the top, and Australia is the choice at the top of the list.

Cheers.

Roz

Still does not work

Hi Rosebud,
Well I will have to admit defeat! Tried again, left no blank spaces and got the same message,

Cheers Lyn

Rosebud Thu, Jun-12-03 14:17

Urrgghh! I'm sorry you're having so much trouble, Lyn!

Did you put "Australia" this time?

Hi Rosebud,
Yes I put in Australia, but still got the message. Perhaps I will try again in a few days,

wheat gluten

Thanks to Rosebud for posting the sites for low carb recipes. I am going to try some of the pancakes as I am fed up of eating eggs for breakfast. Can somebody tell me what wheat gluten is as I have tried to purchase and can only get gluten flour. Is this the same.

Thanks
Kate

Pierre Wed, Jul-16-03 04:49

Gluten

Kate,
Gluten flour is the same thing. I use Lowan brand which is widely available in major supermarkets.

But you are in luck. You can actually buy low carb bread in Perth :yay:

Go to:

Bon Appetit.

NZKiwiana Sat, Sep-20-03 04:14

I'm from NZ. I was wondering if anyone knows where we can buy food suitable for the atkins diet. I know its available online but I prefer a shop I can walk into. My friend in the states buys the bread and I want to know if its available here too and what else might be.

Thanks Nzkiwiana

goodnfast Sat, Sep-27-03 07:46

Hi Rosebud: I was wondering if you might send me a PM so I could email directly (I can't PM myself yet)... we're travelling to OZ in March and I'd like to ask some questions about Brisbane.
Regards

Rosebud Sat, Sep-27-03 16:45

Hi Goodnfast,

I'm afraid you can neither send nor receive private messages until you have made 25 posts.

How about popping into my journal to ask your questions? Or you can start a thread here in the Aussie/NZ forum asking about Brisbane. The several Brisbanites here as well as myself I'm sure will be happy to answer your questions. :)

Thank you

Thank you Rosebud for posting those aussie sites. They will be very helpful!! I love the sites where you can just put in your food and they tell you how many carbs are in it. And the recipes that I looked at sound so nice, especially the sweets : ) I'm really looking forward to start cooking some of this food.

Thanks again.

kiwifriend Fri, Oct-24-03 17:19

Hi Rosebud, just found two sites that might be of interest to Kiwis & Oz.
Some of the stuff was a bit ??? but one actually had a carb counter on food in NZ which I'm pretty sure is also common Oz foods as well? Anyway might be of help to some I hope.
Cheers, Kiwifriend.

Rosebud Sun, Oct-26-03 16:18

Hi Kiwifriend, :)

Unfortunately both of those sites were simply selling stuff, so I've removed the links. Even the carb counter was for purchase. My idea here was for links to informational sites. ;)

If anyone is looking for a carb counter, there is the one on this site (at the right side of the screen), Fitday or Diet Club. If you want one that is not online, most newsagents have calorie counters that also include carb counters. :)

Roz

kiwifriend Mon, Oct-27-03 13:58

Hi Rosebud, I did realise they were trying to sell product thats why I said some was a bit ???? but I thought the carb counter that already had products listed that you just look up might of been of interest. You didn't have to pay to look or anything, just choose what catagory you wanted to look under and a list of products comes up. Oh, well sorry bout that. :-)

If they just order this stuff in from the USA, doesn't that mean it gets through customs? I mean, why not just order it from the source? I've seen a website that sells 15 of those atkins bars for $23 USD, breakfast cereal for $3.90 a box and other great prices on atkins products.

If this stuff actually DOES get through customs (because from the above quote it doesn't sound like they put huge orders in and keep ALL items in stock), then I'm just going to order it myself!

Has anyone tried the empower foods products. They are great, and have just announced they are bringing out a chocoalte mousee called "creme chocolat". Their web is www.empowerfoods.com.au. They also sell muffins, biscuits, cereal, tomato sauce and stirfry suaces....

retrokat Mon, Apr-12-04 08:28

I've been buying the Atkins Empower bars on http://ebay.com.au - they usually go for about AU$2 each, plus minimal postage if you buy a few at once. Cost me $35 incl post for 15 bars over the weekend. Choccie for Easter!

There's a lot of great stuff on the market in the US, but with our restrictive Customs laws in Australia, I'm not sure most of it would (or should) be allowed in, especially by post. Every time you come into the country from overseas, you have to hand over anything containing honey, fruit, nuts etc. So my guess is anything containing those ingredients shouldn't be legal to buy in directly from the US. Although it's certainly a lot cheaper than buying it through some local retailers!

I want to try out as much of the US prepared low-carb vego products as I can to review for my site http://www.bellaonline.com/Site/vegetarian - I guess I'll have to find out the skinny on what foodstuffs CAN be brought in by post. I know there are even laws about what you can send between other states and WA! I got an eBay package addressed to me impounded once because the seller had used an old fruit-box as packaging. Apparently that's a risk for infestation by Coddling Moth or something.

*sigh* Sometimes it's really annoying being in the most remote city in the world! Having the internet and seeing all these great products makes it worse :(

retrokat Mon, Apr-12-04 08:36

And speaking of choccie:

Lindt 85% cocoa Dark Extrafine Chocolate. Total carbs 19% (sugar 13%) but soooo rich that two squares (quarter of a 100g block) is enough for a real treat. It's available at Coles etc, for about $2.99. Amazing choc hit for the $ and carbs. If it's not sweet enough, someone on the empower foods board suggested chewing a Splenda tab at the same time ;)

BTW, Splenda tabs and granules are both now available at my local Coles. Hopefully more low-carb products will start to appear here over the next year or two...

delia Sat, May-22-04 18:51

Try breaking one portion of lindt chocolate into 4 and popping it into your mouth with a brazil nut. You get four little treats for a very low carb count.
Cheers Delia

U-Can-Bake-It stores in Perth also have a couple of lo-carb bread mixes.

One is called Lo-carb, but sometimes it's hard to get. The other is European Grain Mix.

Rod, the owner of the shop in Morley (cnr Walter Road and Coode St) is very helpful.
