No luck with Atkins, will PP work for me???

Just wondering if this plan will work for me since it's so close to Atkins? I have tried Atkins and was strict on it, yet lost nothing in weight or inches... very frustrated I think I am going to switch, but not sure how this would be any more effective if Atkins didn't help me? Any advice? Getting to worry why I can shed 10 pounds!

You're pretty close to your goal weight now so loss is going to slow WAY down. Protein Power is much less restrictive on food as long as you stay below 30 carbs, true, but at this point you might want to try restricting your calories first.

How long were you on Atkins and which version? 1972 is the genuine plan. The plan touted by Atkins Nutritionals, is something toatally different.

Hi, Jrein. I'm not a PP person, but I took a look at your posts going back a few months, and I see that you've tried a lot of things with Atkins.

I agree with Mandalay that 150lb is a reasonable and healthy weight for someone at 5'5. What is it that makes 140 a more desirable weight for you?

I didn't note your age. I can tell you that over 50, weight loss becomes very slow and difficult. Have you had your thyroid checked?

Are you eating enough? I'd say anything under 1800 calories is not enough, especially if you are following LC at 30gm carbohydrate or less.

You've probably heard all this before. However, as I have been unable to drop below my 150lb plateau since November, I sort of feel your pain. Your decision at this point may be based more on how you feel on LC than what you weigh. I know I feel good, and plan to stick with it as my lifestyle. I'm satisfied with my daily menus, and I'm not gaining steadily. That's worth the effort.

Best wishes.

In my opinion, Protein Power and Atkins are the same diet described differently. If you looked at the menus of 100 people on Atkins and 100 people on Protein Power you would not be able to tell which were following which diet.

I would suggest trying something more different. Are you eating any of the Atkins products, like candy, prepared meals, bars, shakes? Those should be the first to go. Low carb processed food is just as bad as other processed food.

Second, are you drinking alcohol? That should go if you are.

Third, a lot of people suddenly begin to lose when they give up dairy. Dairy is highly insulinogenic, more than any other protein. It might take a a few weeks to get it out of your system, but give it a try.

Keep in mind that protein stimulates the production of insulin almost as much as carbohydrate. Are you eating low fat? It's counterproductive. Low carb should be high fat because if you're loading up on protein you're stimulating insulin secretion almost as much as eating high carb.

If none of that works, look in the "tips and stalls" section.

I've done PP and Atkins (and every other diet ever invented) & they got me to 150 lbs (at 5'6"), but I was never able to get lower than that and sustain it until I did an elimination diet to purge my diet of inflammatory foods, which for me include: all dairy but 2T/day butter, all grains, all legumes including peanut butter and anything containing soy, all processed foods, sugar, HFCS and most fruits except a few berries. I eat a vLCvHF moderate protein diet of real foods (5%C-70%F-20%P of calories). My last 15 lbs were inflammation, not fat.

Deidra, do you have any before and after pics? That's wonderful that you've maintained your goal weight for so long. I always skipped that part. Lose the weight/gain the weight back was my moto. I've learned so much now.

^^ this is me. Had to give up dairy, it stalls me terribly. Months worth broken a few weeks ago. It was so painful at first, but now, I don't miss it as much. Down almost 13 lbs in three weeks (but I have a LOT of weight to lose). A lovely side effect has been that my previously terrible stiff, swollen and sore knees have improved MARKEDLY. Dairy may be a lifetime thing for me. :(

Barbara, So, If someone is under 30g carbs, they're calories should be over 1800cal?

I can understand the frustration of a diet not working. As we age, our metabolism slows down making it harder. We might be taking drugs, even OTC drugs, that interfere with weight loss. Even seemingly innocent things like NSAIDs can. HRT sure can. Statins (evil things) can. Thyroid issues, cortisol issues... and so on.

Even if you rule out all that, the human female metabolism can be stunningly resistant to weight loss.

The good news is that you can be healthy, happy and fit at a slightly higher weight than fashion dictates. That's where my focus is these days. I feel just awful when I mis-eat, so I am concentrating on eating as good as I possibly can and exercising (weight lifting, a bit of interval train... no hamster wheeling).

Well, no. However, it does sound like I was making a flat statement about calories. Everybody's different. But I don't think counting calories is best in achieving a sustainable LC lifestyle.

The truth is, I believe that a 30g carb plan "should" result in a menu that adequately meets the energy requirements of the body when other aspects of the menu are also adjusted (fat and protein). Some people will end up eating more, some less, as counted by "calories." I don't think the calorie count is relevant. The signs are good when hunger, appetite, cravings, moods, and energy level are under control. Weight loss, which may also happen, is something each body tends to decide for itself. Bummer, I know.

Not losing?

If younare truly following the plan, and also moving, exercising and not losing, get a quick thyroid check.
