Carb counts for alcohol?

I don't mind a red wine occasionally but that is about it is there any thing else that isn't too bad.......count wise that is?
I think spirits are ok as long as you have diet softdrink with them.

Yep, spirits have no carbs.

You just need to remember 2 things about drinking alcohol. The first is that the body will use the alcohol for fuel in preference to food, so your weight loss may slow a little, even though you may not be taking in any actual carbs.
The other is that we low carbers turn into 2 pot screamers. ;) It has something to do with our livers, but low carbers have a lesser tolerance for alcohol that before. So drink plenty of water or diet soft drinks along the way to prevent the hangover from hell. :o

And BTW, here are some alcohol carb counts: http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/carbcounter/bev.shtml

Cheers, matey.

Thank you, Rosebud for that information. I had been wondering for some time about drinking spirits and the effect it could have after Induction.

Does it depend upon what you mix with the zero carb spirits or low carb drink of choice?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, Dee.
The problem (not a huge problem - just something to be aware of) with drinking alcohol is that it does slow down weight loss. That means any alcohol at all - even spirits with no carbs.
But we want this to become a way of life, and for most of us life includes a little alcohol here and there. :)

One more thing to realise, is that those stupid bits of plastic (can you tell I don't like ketostix? ;)) will show you to be in ketosis after drinking alcohol. Just as they will after you have eaten a fatty meal, and if you are dehydrated.

Cheers,

Roz

Thanks for the great tips Roz, you really know your stuff. I didn't know about the Ketosticks giving wrong readings either.

Okay you answered my question, Rose, thank you.

In essence, it slows the weight reducing effects. I am stalled anyway for probably many reasons. But, once I decide to go back into Induction or some variation of it, then I know what role alcohol can play in it once I finally go into OWL and stay there. :)

in melb i've noticed a fairley new cub beer called "pure blonde".

about 5 carbs per stubbie ( obviously no good in early stages but if you just can't do without the beer as was my case it is ok), tastes a bit like stella artois. can have a nasty aftertaste the next day.

I would love to know why there are no companies out there producing pre-mix drinks with no-carb mixers. Seems like they are missing an entire range of the market. Ready to drink cans and bottles have become huge here (in Australia), but you can't get one that isn't loaded with sugar. Anyone know anyone high up in a company that makes them? Would make my life a whole lot better.
I don't like to have to buy a whole bottle of spirits just so that I can have one drink, because one drink ends up being way more when the bottle is sitting on the bench saying "drink me".
So I don't drink full-stop at the moment, and as you said Rose - it makes the WOL just that little bit harder.

BTW Hi Willow, you're almost a neighbour!

Hi there

We will actually be in Townsville durring the September school holidays and can't wait.

You're so right about the premixes I am surprised they haven't cottoned on to it already.

Malibu and cola would be great, especially coming in to summer, to drink by our new pool.

I had a drink last night, but I bought a little bottle of Scotch. One of the minatures, only cost $4. Then I had no-carb soft drink with it. So it was sort of like having my own premixes, and worked out cheaper too.
We're sitting about the same stats as well - we should keep in contact and see how well we can do before your trip here in the Sept holidays.

I have started drinking 50% white wine and 50% soda water. its very refreshing. My fav though is gin and diet tonic.
