Shirataki Noodles
 

Hello Everyone,

Well I have really wanted to try Shirataki noodles for a long time...for those who don't know they are Japanese noodles made with soy and a bit of yam (i think) and they are really low carb. I have done a google search on them and most of the info I have found states that a serving has 3 grams of carb with 3 grams of fibre! Impressive right? I should have gotten around to trying them when I was in Vancouver (very strong Asian influence there, i'm sure I could have found them if I looked) but alas, now I am here in London and I am wondering if any of you have found them.....or any ideas where to look?

Just looked it up. How can it be low in carbs if it's from the spud family???

Its pretty much all soluble fibre. I have never had a blood sugar spike after eating them. They don't have any effective carbs as far as I know.

you can get them anywhere - safeway, superstore, etc....I buy the fresh ones...and they are fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

This company do them mail order. They have no carbs in them. I havent seen them in any other place so far, but I live in Devon. They are 1.65 a packet, bit expensive really.

Are there any chinese supermarkets near you? My local one sells Shiratake noodles for £1.10. I have become totally addicted to them - very filling and virtually no carbs or calories.

I ate them in Hawaii long ago, but have been looking in UK supermarkets for 3 years, and haven't found them yet!

I eat them daily. They are not in the spud family. The yam designation is really not right. The noodles are made from the soluble fiber of the konnyaku imo plant. The soluble fiber is then added to water where it forms a gel and then it is pressed into the shape of noodles. I get them from http://www.miraclenoodle.com though they don't ship to the UK. The traditional non-tofu ones are better than the ones that have soy in them in my humble opinion. Some are put off because there is a slightly fishy odor when you open the bag as they are packed in water. But if you rinse then actively dry with a paper or regular towel they are ready to go.

The fact that they are instant is a bonus for me and I usually just add a pre-prepared sauce and I'm ready to go!

for everyone around London, you can find all kinds of konnyaku in asian supermarket Oriental City - 399 Edgware Road, London, NW9 0JJ or if you take underground to Colindale then go right from the station -it is just about 10 min walk. It is worth a visit as the prices are best in London: 60 p for konnyaku noodles in compare to £ 1.20 in Cina Town!

I prefer the non soy myself....but like them all!

A side note, when adding to your own sauce...be sure to dry them thoroughly, they will hold water and make the sauce really runny!

They are awesome in soups and stri fries! I can have lo mein again!!!!
