Dangerous nut who might get his way.

When they all give up their private jets ... yeah, I still won't try synthetic beef.

BawdyWench -

Gates also lives in a 40,000 square foot house.

Synthetic "meat" made from industrial canola oil, processed plant protein extracts, chemicals, etc. = vegan junk food. Even vegans should be eating whole real foods and passing on the processed junk.

I think he's expanded it - it's now 66,000 sq. feet according to Wikipedia. Only 7 bedrooms, but 18.75 bathrooms. Our entire house would fit in his dining room.

I'll admit, tho, there are times I wish we had 2 bathrooms!

I don't begrudge him and others their millions or billions one bit. They can have whatever size house they want or however many planes they want. It's their money. If I don't want people telling me what I can and can't do with the money I earn, then I don't have the right to do that to them. If nothing else, I consider how many people are employed building and maintaining the things they buy. Most of us make a living only because other people spend the money they've earned (and vice versa).

Where I draw the line (and I don't think Gates *quite* crossed it with this one -- the video wants to make it appear that way but it clearly has a bias it is pushing hard) is when they proceed to dictate to everyone else how they should live and in a way that is hypocritical to the way they live. If they just want to tell everyone how they should live -- fine, everyone has the right to do that. The hypocrisy drives me up the wall -- and, again, Gates isn't quite there; the video implies that the he still eats MEAT hamburgers but we don't know that -- we don't know how long ago he said that and for all we know the hamburgers he eats now are made using synthetic beef. Have no idea. Yes, he's being very tone deaf telling people that they should eat things that most people can't reasonably afford, even in this country, when obviously that is no hurdle for him. But he may truly believe that the cost is sufficiently low that most Americans and other first world countries CAN reasonably afford them. He may be right or he may be wrong. Be that as it may, he's still only saying what people should do, and (to the best of my knowledge) isn't trying get legislation passed to force people to do it, or to get subsidies passed to force us to pay for making it come to pass "voluntarily".

But when people testify before congress about how the carbon emissions of every else should be reduced by force of law and then insist that those same restrictions shouldn't apply to their homes, or planes, or yachts because it's just one small piece and we shouldn't focus on individuals, that's what gets my blood boiling.

Totally agree with all of you.

B.S. to Gates. He can eat all the synthetic pseudo meat he wants, I'm not getting anywhere near it. Looking at him, I think he would be much healthier looking if he ate MORE real meat.

I don't think the ingredients sound so bad. It's mostly soy and oil plus binders:

Quote:
Water, Soy Protein Concentrate, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, 2% Or Less Of: Potato Protein, Methylcellulose, Yeast Extract, Cultured Dextrose, Food Starch Modified, Soy Leghemoglobin, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (Antioxidant), Soy Protein Isolate, Vitamins and Minerals (Zinc Gluconate, Thiamine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Niacin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Vitamin B12).

I have a friend who eats a "plant-based diet" and she loves Impossible products. She can go out to a restaurant even here in our small town and have a burger. She likes their sausage too. Having been out to lunch with her, and watch her try to avoid even normal things on salads that servers often forget to leave off like cheese, or having a dismal sandwich of mushrooms and condiments, I think these products are excellent for people who want to eat like this. I've never tried them because I avoid soy, but she eats stuff like tofu all the time. To each their own.

I respect Bill Gates for all he's doing in terms of world health. His perspective is very different from his work in poorer countries from that of the average person or even our policymakers. I don't think we have to worry about anyone forcing us to eat "synthetic beef" any time soon.

I'd eat cultured meat (grown from cells of real meat) before I'd touch this stuff. Soy causes all sorts of hormone and immunity problems; I have to avoid it and prefer to get my B vitamins from real meat.

Ms Arielle Sat, Mar-27-21 21:47

I avoid soy as much as possible. It's GMO. According to my grain dealer aka mill.

Ingredients not only exceed 5, but us synthetic garbage. A complete protein would be corn plus soy bean, as SB alone is incomplete
.
Also, the vitamins and minerals are included in real meat products, in forms our body's recognize.

Gates needs to meet Saladin.

I've italicized the stuff that would kill my digestive system (I react to soy like someone getting poisoned on Game of Thrones) and trigger a tortuous bout of my autoimmune disease (which would eventually end in a death like that of a Japanese movie monster who isn't in the Godzilla series. Those get weird.)

The scary part, and I mean this in utter seriousness, is that I didn't used to react this way.

I was reading the work of Wheatbelly doctor William Davis for a year or so when the juxtaposition of snug pants and a low carb wrap with gluten in it made me realize I might have a problem with gluten. My reaction was a painless, but marked, swollen abdomen. What I used to think was caused by a big meal turned out to be a gluten reaction.

After carefully abstaining from gluten for weeks, I not only lost some facial swelling and weight, I discovered that if I was accidentally glutened (I never ate it on purpose again) I would have the most horrible stomach pains. Which only underlined how bad it must be, for me.

It took a serious issue with stress and emergency eating, triggering my autoimmune disease, for me to figure out my next challenge. I was actually cross-reactive with corn gluten, which did not warn me with stomach upset at that time. Following the Wahls autoimmune protocol resulted in my discovery that lectins were serious toxins for me.

Soy is loaded with them.

My point is that so much in our food supply could be slowly killing us without anyone being the wiser. Who doesn't get headaches more days than not? Who doesn't get stomach upset and shrug it off with OTC meds instead of wondering about food allergies? Who doesn't try to "eat healthy" with whole grains, beans, fake meat and soy cheese?

I'm thinking... quite possibly, lots and lots.
