Mayo without soybean oil?

Is there such a thing? I was enjoying all the mayo I wanted on a low carb eating plan, then I realized it was made with soybean oil - NOT good for my thyroid. Does anyone know a brand not made with soy?

Hi Mokki, I have seen one made from safflower oil and read about one made with coconut oil. Some Kroger grocery stores in my area carry the Hain's brand, but you may have to check at a health food store to find soy-free mayo.

I still buy it sometimes, but it really is pretty easy to make. I have even made it with bacon fat for a homemade version of Baconnaise. There are lots of recipes online, and if you have an immersion blender or food processor it really is pretty easy!

There's lots of discussion about mayo in the cooking forums and the paleo forum. You might want to use the advanced search.

i make a great homemade mayonnaise using:
coconut oil, olive oil and walnut oil...
1 whole egg and white wine vinegar...

it's the bomb and it has no carbs. ;)
i don't count the carbs in eggs...

Health food stores and fancy grocery stores sell mayonnaise made with a variety of oils. But in my opinion, they never taste right. I think if you're going to go to all the trouble of getting special mayonnaise, it's worth it to make your own.

After experimenting with a wide variety of fats, I've come to the conclusion that chicken fat is the best fat for making mayonnaise.

Hellman's here in Canada is made with just Canola Oil. As are most non-soy commercial mayos. Canola oil, though, is also goitrogenic, similar to soy, so this is not a great substitute. I really hate making my own but am forced to if I want it due to my thyroid issues. I use a combination of bacon fat and EVOO.

I'm dying to try one made with macadamia nut oil but it's so expensive - like liquid gold...so I'm afraid I won't like it. Hmm I might take capmikee's suggestion about the chicken fat....

Thanks for the tips!

I'm going to try making mayo with Almond oil, I think it's a little less expensive than the Macadamia nut oil.

Found this recently. Tastes great! Acceptable ingredients. No seed oils, no sugar.

Look for Chosen Foods avocado oil mayo. The label says zero carbs, but with eggs and honey in it, it's probably .5g per tablespoon. Costco sells it online for $7.99 for 24 oz., and that would be cheaper in the store. Otherwise, you can find it for around $7 for 12 oz.

Primal Kitchen is $8.50 for 12 oz., so a little more if you buy it at a regular supermarket, with the upside of no added sweetener.

I’ve tried the Chosen Foods avocado oil mayo but hated the taste! I’ve tried Primal Kitchen too and thought the texture was nasty. Chosen Foods makes a Coconut Oil/MCT mayo that tastes fabulous and I thought I’d found Nirvana, except that it gives me such horrible runs that I can’t go out in public or be farther than 10 feet from a toilet if I eat it (don’t ask me how I know this). I’ve hated the taste of every mayo I’ve made. I adore mayo but have never found a non-soybean oil one that I could bear to eat.
