I am back after doing Atkins off and on for years

Hi guys, I am trying once again to lose some pounds after doing Atkins off and on since the 1970s. I have had really good success before but boy does it
become harder with age. I will be 70 in December so I started at the end of August to lose from 162lbs. I am now at 150 and I already feel better! My problem is I am not having regular bowel movements. Any suggestions on what I can do to help this? I look forward to getting to know all of you and
sharing tips, encouragement, and recipes with all of you!!!

Hi eaglelady, welcome.

Not sure which version of Atkins you are doing, but if you are doing the 2002 version, makes sure most of your carbs are coming from vegetables. If that doesnt help the digestion, you can always add psyllium husk fiber. I like the Metamucil capsules when I need something to move things along. Foods higher in fiber include peppers, avocado and jicama. I try to get the fiber from foods when possible and keep the water intake up. That helps too

In addition to the great advice above, consider a probiotic in pill form. The microbione is thrown off when the foods we consume change drastically.

In my family we regularly drink plain kefir, kombucha andother fermented foods. Adding unpasturized apple cider vinegar like Braggs to my oil and vinegar salad dressing is a bonus.

Welcome back to low carb.

Be sure you are drinking enough water and having enough salt. Lack of water balance contributes to constipation, more on required Salt: https://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=445775

Constipation is hard to pass stool not less bulk, because LCers eat more nutrient dense foods and less fiber, it is perfectly fine "to go" less often.
The alternate view on Fiber: https://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=481174

But if still concerned, the Duke clinic suggests a small dose (not full cap) daily of MOM...or:

Constipation: If you are experiencing constipation (hard stools or hard-to-pass stools), there
there are a number of ways that you may address the issue.
-use 1 teaspoon of milk of magnesia at bedtime daily
-add ½ cup of fiber-rich vegetables to your diet per day
-have 1 to 2 servings per day of sugar-free gum or sugar-free candy that contains sorbitol or
another sugar alcohol
-use sugar-free Metamucil twice a day

I don't use any of the fiber supplements (after reading thread above) and instead like a product called Natural Calm, a pleasant way to get more magnesium while also preparing for sleep.

Janet, I take a Magnesium Citrate each night. Still constipation is a slight problem. I’ve seen Natural Calm at our Health store. Do you think it’s ok to take a dose in the morning. I take Benefiber and drink Smooth Move tea. Doesn’t seem to help. I also take Psyllium Husk capsules when not taking the others. Trying to find what will work for me. MoM works but don’t like to take on regular basis, since it’s a laxative. Is it bad to take daily? I drink lots of water. Salt not so much. Would that help to up my salt intake? I’ve never been very regular anyway. Any help would be appreciated.

Dr. Westman is big on using more water and salt rather than the fiber. #1 alternate treatment is salt and water, or bouillon #2 is small amount of magnesium. The daily MOM dose is only a tsp., not close to the big capful. He talks about the other products you are taking here too:

The Natural Calm magnesium is suppose to be relaxing, but if it doesn't make you sleepy, then take it whenever you want.
