Hi everyone -

I'm in Houston, TX (live near the Galleria, work in the Med Center) and recently restarted Atkins Induction. I was hoping to start a thread for LC Houstonians - where we could exchange info/tips on where to find LC products, good LC restaurants, and any other helpful info? I'll start!

For example, does anyone in Houston know where I can get Diet Rite soda? I went to a Flagship Randall's yesterday, found Splenda, but no Diet Rite. Would HEB or Fiesta have it?

A Moveable Feast, located off I-10/Blalock in the Echo Lane Shopping Center has a great health food restaurant nextdoor, and they have a dish called "ATKINS SPECIAL". It's grilled veggies (some onions, kale, etc) and you can get it with tofu or chicken. It sounds really plain but it's very very yummy! It's a great store too.

Also, Taco Cabana: When in a huge rush, I've done the drive thru at TC and gotten grilled chicken/beef fajita meat, a side of shredded cheese and a small side of sour cream. It's really, really cheap and very yummy!

If anyone has other suggestions, restaurant recommendations or other cool LC "discoveries" in Houston, please share!!

I too am in the Houston area.(Sugar Land). I found Diet Rite cola at Kroger's. I haven't tried it yet though. I am addicted to diet cherry 7 up even though it has aspertame. I just have 1 per day. It is my dessert. I am glad you started this thread.
let's see.... since induction I have been to Luby's, Saltgrass,Chili's and Outback. I have been very successful at finding low carb food there. In a rush I opt for Chick-fil-a's Chicken ceasar! It is good !
I have done the tex mex trick but I was at Ninfa's.
Let me know if you find any more spots! Also GNC in the Park Shops Downtown sells alot of Atkins Products !

Hi! Another Houstonian!

I also found Diet Rite at Kroger the other day....but I only saw the cola flavor. Have you seen any other flavors, like orange or root beer? I've seen people on these board talk about other flavors.

What did you have at Chilis and Ninfas that were Induction-friendly? I haven't been to Chilis in forever, but I LOVE tex-mex. :)

I'll try to check out the GNC downtown.....do you shop at Fiesta? Every Fiesta I've been in has had a big Atkins section. I think you can look up specific stores on the Atkins website...but don't go to any Randall's.....I went to two Randalls stores and they didn't have ANY Atkins products, even though they were listed on the Atkins website!

Thanks for the tips!!! :)

Hi! I live in Huffman, but work in midtown Houston. What is the scoop on Diet Rite? I generally drink diet Coke, which has 0 carbs. Is it a different sweetener?

I really enjoy the Atkins Endulge bars, which I find at Wal Mart for 96 cents.

Has anyone found Atkins ice cream? Krogers doesn't carry it - at least not the Atascocita store.

I think eating out is easy on Atkins - I opt for a chef's salad. You can't go wrong with that.

I'm so glad I made contact with other in Houston.

Hi Anshim!!

You should come to the party next Saturday! It is an Atkins party for everyone, there's about 12 people coming to Jillian's, very close to you! The invite is a few threads down on the page. Feel free to bring your family or a friend! Congratulations on starting a wonderful way of life!

I got Diet Rite at Kroger's, but if you have a Rice Epicurean, wow, they have Diet RC w/splenda and it is outstanding... but to answer your question about the flavors, unfortunately no. The flavors can be found at Brookshire Bros., but those stores are in the country. I know of no major chain here in Houston that sells the flavors, but you can always call the Dr. Pepper plant in Plano (they are the ones that make it) and ask where they are in H-town.

If you enjoy Root Beer, you can find Diet Root 66 made w/Splenda also at Kroger and Randall's, and possibly Rice. Not sure. It is the best diet root beer I have ever had!

I can eat at almost ANY restaurant in town--you just have to know what you are getting. I've even gotten to know the folks at Escalante's so well that DH and I bring our own low-carb tortillas to the restaurant with us--no kidding. So, we have their wonderful fajitas in our tortillas. They warm them for us and everything! They are great! I am over in Memorial near Town and Country. DH's and my favorite restaurant is Taste of Texas! OH YEAH! *giggle* Good stuff there!

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask...!

Hi

I'm also looking for low carb resources in Houston! We need a low carb grocery store.

I also wanted to mention Hansen's Natural Sodas which are also made with Splenda- they come in many different fruit flavors. I have purchased them at Costco on the Katy freeway and at Central Market but I would guess that they also carry them at other stores such as HEB. Arizona Ice Tea now makes diet ice tea with Splenda instead of nutra-sweet. I have also found a few Atkins products including ice cream at the Randell's on San Felipe and Sage.

Chacho's on Westheimer just west of Fountain veiw on the north side has a "High Protien" menu where they don't include any carbs in the dish-there are several yummy items on this menu and the prices are very low.

CVS Pharmacy on Westheimer and the West Loop has a good selection of low carb bars and low carb candy.

If I find a store that has a good variety of stuff all in one place I'll let you know.

Also on Dairy Ashford and I-10 there is a Sandys Produce Market that carries not only an Atkins center, but loads of Low Carb stuff, everything from Pasta, cereal, to ice cream! I love that store....probably will stop there again after I leave the Jillians Event on Saturday.. If you are coming from Katy, exit Dairy Ashford cross the light and the store is to your right on the feeder road. I don't remember the little street next to it, but it runs behind Tully Stadium.

Happy Shopping!!!

hey guys i'm in galveston and at krogers i found SLENDER ice cream made with splenda it only has about 9 effective carbs and it is so good. tastes like the real mccoy. the atkins ice cream is nasty compared to this and for only 5 extra carbs i'll eat the slender.

i bought butter pecan and my kids and husband eat it - they can not tell the difference from regular ice cream.

they many good flavors.

where is the closest fiesta if you are coming from galveston?

I was driving down Heights towards I-10 and saw a lil restaurant called Hickory Hollow and the sign said that they speak Atkins there. I haven't been in yet, but I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Definitely let us know how Hickory Hollow is! I have lots of friends on Atkins in Houston and we're always sharing new restaurants and price comparisons for Atkins products.

Sandy's is definitely the best, but the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Westheimer near Kirkwood has great prices on Atkins bars - $1.57 ea.

Hi all. I love the Atkins Endulge bars (caramel). I was buying them at the Atascocita Walmart Super Center for 97 cents. They have been out of stock for about 3 weeks now. Is anybody else finding this to be true?

I called Diet Rite and was told they only sell the Diet Cola in our area. They are not sure when we will get more of the flavors. Mississippi is the closest area that has most of the flavors. I was give a few web sites that carry the Diet Rite Sodas, so you can have it delivered to your door. 1) www.drsoda.com 2) www.low-carb.com 3) www.hometownfavorite.com

Sandy Produce on the Katy Freeway is AWESOME for Atkins products!! They sell the shakes 4 for 7.99 where as Randall's sells it for 11.99. I also bought Hanson's Diet Kiwi-Strawberry there and it is really good. They also sell another brand of ice cream there in the freezer section above the ATKINS ice cream, it has 6 or 7 carbs but has flavors like Choc-Almond , Lemon, Strawberry and Cinnamon ( which i hear is really good)

I also found a drink called Diet Slim-Lite at SAMS club on 1-10 and Fry Rd it is made with Splenda and comes in Tropical Berry, Mango-Orange, Kiwi-Strawberry and Cran-Raspberry.

Hope this helps :)

I finally checked out Hickory Hallow...that place has some good ribs... My bf and I split a rack of ribs and had grilled zuchinni on the side. I recommend it!!!

[FONT=Arial] I live in North Houston and am trying out Atkins. I have 15-20 pounds to lose.

I'm trying to understand the focus around eating "atkinized" unhealthy foods like ice cream, bars and soda. Does this make for a lifestyle change? Is it for coping reasons?

korry1977
Wed, Oct-01-03, 21:27
Actually, if your just starting then you probably need to start with induction...

Tue, Oct-07-03, 13:54
Korry,
I'm not talking about Induction - I am talking about Atkins in general - as a lifetime program....is all this attention on "fake" or "substitute" foods good? Why not just try and focus on enjoying healthy foods to better the chances against relapsing?
Just curious.

korry1977
Tue, Oct-07-03, 14:56
Actually, I am really not sure... I am still on Induction :)

:yay: Hi! I'm near The Woodlands! I love this diet...I eat fajita salad at least once a week at any Mexican place. Sams Club had unbelievable prices on Atkins Endulge bars and 16 packs of Atkins Choc.Delite Shakes(way better prices than Walmart). I like to go to Jack in the Box and get one,or sometimes two, Jumbo Jacks with cheese-no ketchup or onions-and take the bread off-I cut it up with a knife and fork. They are 99 cents each and really good. Walmart carries frozen dinners called Chef's Choice that are low carb.-most taste good, but some are high in sodium. Wishbone Ranch salad dressing has only 1 carb for 2 tablespoons--I just found out. Willie's Icehouse offers a lowcarb chicken dish ...it has bacon, cheese and mushrooms and veggies and a salad. It would be fun to have a Houston low carb group and meet once a month at a restaurant. It would be encouraging to see each other as we progress and share tips. It seems like everywhere I go,I meet people who are on a low carb diet.

Hi there...I am Keli from Katy! Glad to have found a group of Houstonians on Atkins.

I have found Atkins LC Ice Cream at HEB and Wal-mart. The Atkins IC comes in single servings which I think is a smarter idea than the Breyer's Half Gallon of LC IC. HEB also sells LC bread and bagels but, I am not positive if it was Atkins brand...I believe it was. I have not tried any of these products so, I can't give you a thumbs up or down!

Grilled Chicken Salads from fast food restaurants are my favorite lunch time meal if I can't eat at home. I have found that Babin's has great broiled seafood dinners with many no-carb side dishes.

I have to admit that I am finding it difficult to eliminate caffeine! My Starbucks addiction is getting the best of me but, I am so happy with the results of this WOE. I am no longer starving and craving sugars and carbs two hrs after eating. I have more energy and don't feel terribly bloated like I used to!

I look forward to seeing posts from this group in the future!

by the way the best places for low carb ice cream are walmart and krogers

walmart carries le carb, carb smart, klondike carb smart fudge bars and atkins ice cream - the klondike fudge bars are great. le carb ice cream is good and has less carbs 3 net carbs per serv but i prefer to eat the slender brand listed below at 7 carbs per serv.

krogers carries the pierre's Slender brand ice cream and they also have a kroger brand no added sugar that is low carb. the slender brand is the best ice cream at 7 net carbs per serv.

Hi all...just found this board looking around for info. I live in the Katy area, like a couple others. Just wanted to post up some info. I've found on my LC searches!

I have found Diet Rite at all of the Randall's around my home and office areas. Randall's also has several different brands of ice cream bars. I've also found the ice cream at Wal-Mart, Sam's and Krogers. I'm not a HUGE ice cream fan, so I've only tried a couple different ones. I am a candy nut, thought, so the Russell Stover and Pure De-Lite candy have been a God-send. I have found both brands at Walgreens, but don't have much luck finding them anywhere else (except the Pure De-Lite which I also get at a health food store by my office).

My sister is also on Atkins and shops at Krogers. She says they have a lot of LC stuff, including the tortillas. I also got a flier in the mail the other day from HEB showing they have expanded their LC products and even have pasta now!

I'm sure everyone has heard, but just in case...TGIFriday's has some Atkins approved menu items and Subway has added Atkins approved/endorsed wraps to their menu. Friday's has some items that look fine for induction.

As far as suggestions for eating out, someone asked earlier about Chili's. I get the chicken caesar salad or the monterey chicken (without the BBQ sauce and tomotaoes) and the veggies. Both are great. Outback is also a great place to go; pretty much anything on the menu is delicious and works with the LC plan. I think all of their chicken dishes are grilled (I like the Alice Springs, minus the honey mustard and mushrooms....i just don't like mushrooms!), they have a lot of seafood choices and, of course, the steaks. At mexican restaurants, I just order fajitas and eat the meat with some cheese and sour cream. Eating out is really very easy, just gotta watch those sauces and the vegetables, depending on what stage of Atkins you're on.

Also, for any of you that take the Atkins supplements, my husband and I just found some pretty good prices on them at the Vitamin Shoppe. There aren't that many of them in Houston right now, but you can order online. They also have a "frequent buyer" type program that adds up your purchases from the year and then you get a sort of "gift card" based on what you spent.

Glad to see a Houston thread started! Hope it keeps going; I'm always looking for new info., products and availability of products!

Just want to update on some items I've found around when out shopping!
Found the raspberry and white grape Diet Rite at the Super Wal-Mart on FM 529 (Copperfield area). The Super Wal-Mart also has a lot more of a LC selection than they have in the past with bake mixes, cookie mixes, pizza crust mix, cake mixes, Russel Stover candy, Atkins food products, etc.

Today, I found low-carb cheeseburgers WITH A BUN! (12g per cheeseburger...they're pretty good size, too) and Orowheat low carb bread (6g per slice; the slices are not as big as the Nature's Own, though, so if you like big slices of bread, stick to the Nature's Own!) at the Sam's on Highway 6 at I-10. This Sam's and the one on Fry Road had not been carrying the Endulge peanut butter cups and caramel nut chews for awhile now, but they are back and are cheaper by the box than anywhere else I've found (I think they were around $12.67 or $12.97 a box). They also have 12 packs of the Atkins Endulge vanilla ice cream bars for pretty cheap too (in comparison to the 4 pack prices you pay at the grocery store). All in all, I was very pleased with Sam's and Wal-mart in my past couple of trips and am considering sending an e-mail thanking them for upping their LC line! Would encourage you all to do the same so they keep carrying these items and maybe more!

Okay...at Randall's: Soy nuts (I don't like them, but my husband is going through them like mad!), LC pasta (spaghetti and penne) and these cool little soy snacks that look like those spiral Fritos. They come in Ranch and Nacho Cheese. The nacho cheese aren't bad and satisfy my potato chip/crunchy food urge.

Wal-Mart: Skippy makes LC peanut butter, 3g per serving. But, I found some Peter Pan peanut butter (low sodium, no sugar added kind...has a yellow label) that also has 3g. LC marinara sauce, Russel Stover chocolate sauce and Russel Stover makes assorted LC chocolates in the boxes like they do with their "regular" candy. Wal-mart also had LC pasta...

News: I've read on the internet that the LC Heinz ketchup should be hitting shelves in February or March-ish. Coors is supposed to be coming out with a LC beer. Burger King will be doing bunless Whoppers (chicken and hamburger) and adding a salad to their menu that you can top with steak, chicken or shrimp. I couldn't find any date on the Whopper, but I think the salad is supposed to be added in March. And the news I was most excited about....LC Tostitos and Doritos are in testing right now and are scheduled to hit the stores in May!

WalMart seems to have cornered the market for the most part. Every time I go they have tons of Diet Rite, including the lemon-lime one...Also, did you know that Ben & Jerry's has the best new ice cream out called Carb Carma. There's chocolate, vanilla almond, and another one, but I forgot the name. They have 4 net carbs per scoop and it is sooooo delicious!

I found low carb tortillas at Randalls (don't remember the brand, but pretty sure it was not La Tortilla) and I found LC Mission tortillas at Sam's today. Also at Sam's were Hershey's LC chocolate and chocolate with almonds.

Sam's and Wal Mart are awesome for all of the LC products they have. The Randalls out by where I live (Katy/Bear Creek) is also adding more and more every time I go it seems. My pantry looks like the Carb Options factory! I haven't tried any of it yet, but in case anyone hasn't seen the blue Carb Options labels in the store: Ragu has spaghetti & alfredo sauces, Wishbone has dressings, Lawry's marindes and I forget what brands of BBQ and steak sauces and ice cream. Sara Lee makes LC bread, too now. Just waiting for good ol' Sara to LC the rest of that line of goodies!!

Has anyone tried the LC pasta? The brand I've seen at Randalls is Carb Fit or something like that...its in a green and black box. Just curious what it & the Keto brand macaroni and cheese are like before I break down and buy some!

The Randalls Flagship on Westheimer at Shepherd has an ice cream that blows all the others away. It has a couple of flavors that are better than any--peanut butter fudge swirl, and butter pecan.

I'm back and it is Carb Solutions Ice Cream, I found it at the super HEB.

Also found Diet Rite 4 12 packs for $9.

The best tortillas are Mission, which I got at Super Target.

And the Sara Lee breads are great, I made a bread pudding that was fabulous, served it to non LC-ers. Kind of high in carbs--8 carbs per serv.

Hi Everyone, I too am a Northwest Houstonian and also new to the this lowcarb org. Just wanted to share a couple of items with you. I live just off Jones Road and the GNC store there puts everthing 20% off first 7 days of every month. Also they put all of there low carb candy bars that are about to expire on sale. I purchased a whole load of Atkins and other low carb bars for $0.37 each. There is nothing wrong with them. Chocolate still looks and stays fresh. Also Randall's Grocery out here sells there boxes of Atkins Bake Mix for $9.99 each. Lastly I think I have found a good low carb spaghetti pasta replacement at Hong Kong Market off Veterans Memorial. They are called Longkou Vermicelli (Green Bean Threads). Ingredients Mung Beans, Broad Beans, Peas and Water...... 0 fats, cholesterol, sugars and protein... Total Carbs 4.7 grms and dietary fiber 2grms. Net Carbs 2.7grms. Cook them just like angelhair pasta in salted boiling water about 5 minutes or to your preferred softness. Sorry this such a long post. Enjoy reading your shared information.

Hi all, someone else may have posted this already -if so, sorry for the redundancy...

Anyway, I recently went to Ninfa's (downtown, Navigation) and decided to just tough it out and eat the taco salad while my brother got to eat delicious fajitas....

but lo and behold!! they have low-carb options on the menu! They served me up a fajita plate with chicken fajita, jack cheese, queso (which i didn't eat, not sure about carbs w/ that kind of cheese), pico de gallo, avacado, and letuce. You just wrap everything in the lettuce and you won't even notice you're not eating the tortilla -the avacado really makes up for that.

they had other options as well -you should check it out...

I've seen the carb countdown milk & smoothies at Randall's. I know Wal-Mart has the milk. I haven't been to a Wal-Mart since the smoothies came out so don't know if they have those too.

Hi everyone, I moved to Houston from Australia a few months ago. I am finding all the info great. I found Sandy's when I was here last year and need to make a visit there again soon.

We eat at Bennigans a fair bit and they have some good low carb meals.

Anyone want to resurrect this thread or ?
So much has happened over the course of a couple years-- the locarb business has been booming, and now you can't go anywhere without finding at least a list of something to eat for the LC'ers.

I have not kept up with the LC scene in Houston. I do however love HEB Mootopia milk. Its not that bad. Its lactose free, and reduced sugars/carbs.

Good for an active lifestyle.

HI. Nice to meet you. I'm south of Houston, down in Pearland. Pretty far from the Galleria but we might find some opportunities to help each other. For example, if you ever need an LC doctor, mine is pretty good. PM me if you want to exchange contact info.

Would love to hear about your LC Doctor. I am going to see Dr. Reddy for the first time, but he is all the way down in Sugarland. Wouldn't mind having other options if Dr. Reddy's office is just too hard to get to from Houston.

I am a new member here, so I don't think I have pm privileges.

If you are registered, you have pm. Look in the User CP on the green bar, up at the top. It's the first item.
Anyway, Dr. Rafiq is at the professional building in the Memorial Hermann Hospital Southeast complex, right around the corner from San Jacinto College South Campus. It's still not too close to Houston but It is a straight shot south from downtown, on the Gulf Freeway.
He is not proactively LC but he won't scold you or tell you to eat more grains if you tell him you eat keto, or LC or other buzzwords that he will know is w/o sugar and starches. I also don't think he freaks out over high total cholesterol when your HDL and TGs are right.
What part of town are you in?

Just a Debbie downer about low lactose milk...sorry but
it's not low carb.
Stick to heavy cream and cheese for your calcium.

But on a positive note: HEB has the highest fat cream so lowest carb count of all the creams and the lowest price too!!

That is true of brands like Lactaid and other specifically lactose free milk but Mootopia has only six g./8 oz.
https://www.heb.com/product-detail/h-e-b-mootopia-lactose-free-2-reduced-fat-milk/671076

It is their own product, different from the other lactose free brands. I actually hadn't noticed the very prominent 'lactose free' banner emblazoned on the carton, in my automatic action of turning the carton around to see the panel on the back. I know 6g. is not VLC but it's half, or less, than most milk that you see. I indulge in just an ounce or so, mixed with a splash of cream, to wash down foods that are like comfort foods if had w/milk. It also helps tremendously for my dh who is being forced to do lc for his diabetes. It's a whole different picture when it is not a choice you made for yourself, but you do it due to it being the only way to prevent health catastrophes from DM.
I appreciate having it pointed out to me that it is lactose free since my grown dd comes over quite a bit and she tries to consume less lactose. Her sensitivity has improved but she is concerned that if she just drinks it w/o care, it will return.
I'll check out the cream, too. I never knew that.

About the private messages, if you go to your User CP, where you set up your stats, look in that same section and find 'edit options'. There you will find the ability to check a box that allows the messaging. I tried to send you a message but it told me you haven't enabled it. I also set you up as a 'buddy' since we might have a lot to share with each other about resources around here, in general. If you don't want to do that, let me know and I will remove it. Nice to meet you, regardless.

Ann, no one is permitted to PM until the day after their 25th post. This is to prevent spam PMs, as well as new folks 'pestering' a single member instead of participating publicly in the forums and allowing everyone to throw in their 2 cents.

I've trained myself to really never top 20g a day so 8g is off the charts for me. I'm just trained to have cream now. Besides there are no cereals or chocolate cookies to go with it, so no point

Plus it looks like it has 6g sugar, so that's not just carbs and your body knows it.

My dessert now is coffee with the cream...

HEB is the lowest and was $3.79 for a quart but recently went up 30cents but still the best buy in town, the price of pints in other stores.
I will say that DH and I, combined, go through 2-3 quarts per week.
