Can anyone recommend a supplement or vitamin that will help me with sugar and carb cravings?

Skauska, to quote Doreen:

In DANDR Dr. A recommends 500 - 1000mg glutamine before meals to deal with general cravings. For cravings that are happening between meals, he suggests taking this amount right at the time of the craving. Dr Atkins also suggests taking chromium for cravings as well ... but you would take this once or twice a day at the same time every day ... to ensure a steady level in the bloodstream at all times. Generally 200 to 400 mcg per day . The Drs. Eades in Protein Power recommend 300mcg chromium once daily for improved insulin sensitivity, and twice a day (total 600mcg) for diabetics .

Thanks for your help! I'm headed out to GNC now to buy both the Chromium and the Glutamate. This website is SOOOO helpful! I started my period today so the sugar cravings are even more intense. I hope this will help!

Skauska, glutamine, not glutamate :) And don't go to GNC! You'll pay twice the price. They should carry both products at Wal-mart or a similar store. Glutamine comes in pills and a powder - the powder might be a better buy, you can mix it with water/coffee/protein shakes and not notice it. The chromium you can find at all pharmacies/bulk stores. GNC is much too expensive.

Hi Natruska! Thanks for your reply, unfortunately when I said I was leaving, I left immediately so I am just now getting your reply. I did buy the L-Glutamine 500, 50 capsules for $ 7.99, and Chromium Picolinate 400, 30 capsules for $ 4.99. GNC offers the second product at 50% off so I wrote the check for $ 11.01. Next time I will go to Walmart, or at least buy during the first 7 days of the month when I get 20% off.

Now to reiterate your previous suggestion: I take the Glut at each meal and whenever I have a craving, and I take the Chromium only once a day at the same time. (Do you know if it's ok to take with Synthroid?) Let me know if this is right! Thanks for your help!

hi Skauska,

Synthroid or any thyroid hormone replacement should always be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour away from any food, drink (other than water), other medications or supplements.

If you've always taken it with food, then best to continue doing that, since your blood levels will be based on how much of the hormone is getting into your system. If you all of a sudden start taking it an hour before breakfast, you could end up with levels too high. Talk to your doctor if you're concerned :)

Hi Doreen! Thanks for your advice. I currently take Synthyroid first thing out of the bed in the morning with no food or anything else. I'll continue with that plan. Thanks again!
