Wa'il, I find it interesting that your favourite food is lamb and your favourite movie is Silence of the Lambs?

-LC Start date – July 1999
-Married, single, other – single
-City, County /Hemisphere – Vancouver, Canada

-Favourite non-low carb food – good ice cream. Mmm, Hagen Daz
-Food you can't live without on Low carb – umm, meat?

Hi Guys

Well my abhorrence of anything groupish nearly put me off but I'll make the effort. I figure you have a right to know who's dishing out all this abuse. Rachel - keep your head below the parapet....

* Board name and real world name
Nicola Russell

* Age and SEX F (last time I looked)/ A mere 39 years
* LC Start date; I cant remember, maybe 27 Mar 2001
* Married, single, other; Married for ever (seems like it) to a
very kind, laid back and thin hibernian. You know the kind of
bloke that's so nice everyone wonders why on earth he married
you... I give him hell (got to treat em mean to keep em keen!)
* City, County /Hemisphere Down under, Melbourne, Australia -
formerly of the UK and born a Kiwi (Citizen of the world but will
probably hang out here for a while)
* Occupation: I try to do as little as possible, I try to be a Mum but I dont think I'm terribly good at it and when I cant avoid it I'm an HR Consultant, usually strategic stuff and change management
* Kids, pets, pests; Gabriel, the Gabesaurus - the world's coolest kid (with a sleep problem) but I swear, if he doesnt turn out to be just like Sean Connery, I'll eat my hat. 3 mangey turks - cats that is. Not really mangey - just damned unhealthy. Miss Lily is aged with poorly controlled diabetes and constantly running eyes but is an old sweetie, Roy - the young buck who just happens to have moderately severe epilepsy, torn ligaments in the back leg and osteoarthritis. Mungo - a supremely healthy old bloke who can run at about 70kms an hour and jump 2.5m straight up but I suspect is marginally braindamaged. You are unlikely to meet a larger cat or one that is so dim.
* Current Low Carb status (ie losing, maintenance, would kill for a visit from the whoosh fairy); Good question. Have traded in the scales and am living on faith.

AND FOR FUN........

* Favourite low carb food; lc gravadlux, crayfish and moreton bay bugs with all sorts of yummy lc sauces, fillet with bearnaise will also never go amiss. Fruit fools rule.
* Favourite non-low carb food; Haagen Daz coffee or dulce de leche icecream chased down by swiss chocolates
* Food you can't live without on Low carb; Good coffee & fruit fools
* Favorite type of exercise; my electric weight toning machine!! Swimming, walking, body surfing and free weights
* If you could be paid for the thing you most like to do what would it be?; Changing the world and failing that - food tasting!
* Person you'd most like to meet currently living; this week's inspiration Tina Kaye, Nicole Kidman of course, I just have to know what the deal is with this divorce and I'd like to meet Sean Bean but not really just to meet him if you know what I mean ...
* What are you currently reading; Nothing at all exciting I mean "Toddler Taming " and "Baby & Child" (i'm getting desperate). All set to read Nelson's "Long walk to freedom" and Bill Brysons "A walk in the woods". Told you I was into walking...
* What's your favourite movie; and .... Very difficult, I love movies almost as much as I love books and food ....2 that really made me roll with laughter "The Full Monty" and "Weekend at Bernies".
* Just anything else you'd like to share.
I got a job this week and it wasnt even a fat persons job!! This diet must be working because noone even seemed to notice that I'm fat so I already owe a lot to this WOE.

Two months ago, there was nothing much around and nobody wanted me and now the market is even worse and I had a choice of two.

The difference? 29lbs less, greater energy, more confidence. I had a choice of a very well paid job at one of the 2 computer co's (which i turned down - who wants to play shepherd to 800 nerds??) and a less well paid but seriously fun job with the City of Melbourne (the local government agency which covers the heart of Melbourne, the CBD). Its a wierd sort of thing and I'm still not sure if I've got it straight but they want me to take a loose HR strategy and turn it into plans and interventions which will ensure they meet their newly articulated people objectives and competencies. I sort of dream up ideas and get them approved by the executive then go and find the HR people (they're in a different division for some strange reason) and get them to roll out the projects while I project manage them.

Leastways thats what I think I'll be doing. Definitely my kind of job, do a bit of looking under stones, pull a few rabbits out of a hat, mooch around talking to other people and then get other people to do the real work! What sealed it for me was that the Director I'll be working for is really nice - a dinkum Aussie, straight talking, outgoing, realistic but focussed and they were only too happy to get me.

A far cry from my all time low, earlier this year when I didnt get a job that I went for (which I could do standing on my head) because I was very nice but maybe not dynamic enough!!! This feedback combined with the look of horror on her size 8, face when she saw me. Well it really hurt and made me scurry off home and give up. As you can imagine few people call me nice!! and not dynamic enough is definitely a first. I was upset and angry and it took me until I started this WOE to decide that that was it and I was going to get back to looking good and I was going to walk all over those people on my way back up.

After two weeks on this WOE, I was just out there and maybe because I havent been acting like a 'fat person', things have just got more and more positive until now I'm back in the game!! Going to keep this WOE up though, I've still got a few bugs to squash!!

I low carb mainly to look after my blood sugar, so I expect to lose weight much slower. Most of the time I eat at a maintenance level of carbs, so I know if I want to lose weight faster, I'll have to drop my daily carbs. Most who know me always say I don't need to lose weight, BUT, these folks haven't seen me in the shower!!!

AND FOR FUN........

* Favourite low carb food --- bacon and eggs or salad
* Favourite non-low carb food --- Chocolate
* Food you can't live without on Low carb --- Kay's Low Carb Bread Recipe..(not sure how I survived before I got this recipe from Kay).
* Favorite type of exercise --- walking, running up and down the office steps (15) hundred times a day (just kidding, but sometimes it seems I do), I cut a big lawn, have flower gardens, shovel my own snow...in general a lot of "mother nature" projects, after which I usually head to my hot tub on my deck. I sometimes do a gym program (machines), usually in the winter.
* If you could be paid for the thing you most like to do what would it be? --- I'd love to be the hostess with the mostess...and make people's day...make them smile, so that they in turn could smile back at someone...and then make their day. I'd like a job that requires very little responsibility and somedays a no brainer, one I could go home and forget about at night, that's if this type of job exists??
* Person you'd most like to meet currently living --- there's too many to mention (Doreen, Curtis Joseph, Tinakaye, Rachel, Curtis Joseph, Kay, Wa'il, Curtis Joseph, Karen, NNN, and did I mention Curtis Joseph, DebbieDobson) (these are just a few) (((Since posting this in May I did get to meet Debbie and Doreen at our summer Toronto get together....what a treat))))
* What are you currently reading --- not reading a novel at the present time - heck I can't keep up with the forum right now, let alone start a novel!!
* What's your favourite movie --- The Gladiator
* Just anything else you'd like to share ---"All we need most days is a little sun, a little fun and someone to love".....

The thing I'd like to be doing in 10 years - "Retired, lazing on some Caribbean Beach, with some gorgeous hunk"....(Heck, who I am trying to kid, I'd like to be doing that now!!)

Since about October 2000 I've been doing lots of inner-work on myself, and I'm currently trying to figure out just how these people can actually meditate! I still get excited for each and every holiday, and I'm still a kid at heart:)

Welcome aboard Andi!

Just curious, which people, and what meditation?

Thanks for the welcome Wa'il!

About the people and meditation.....Anyone who can actually find that tranquil place during meditation is waaaay ahead of me!

Right now I'm working on being able to get to the point where I can begin to work on my chakras. This, by the way, is confusing me as well since I just read last night that there are 33 chakras. I thought it was seven, then I got comfortorable envisioning 13, but 33???

Any advice for me would be so much appreciated! I am an empath, and it's very hard for me to keep my energy IN and the energy around me OUT:)

I would really like to find a good guided meditation CD. Know of any?

Thanks again!
Andi

Sorry, I'm no expert in meditation :)

I was just wondering if by "how these people can meditate" was referring to special kind of meditation.

Well, what I know about meditation is that it's low-carb! :)

New to this board......I am trying to get back into the low carb mode........however, I have been doing weight watchers for a while and it is so different.

I think I need fruits/veggies, but it seems fruit has so many carbs......

Can anyone tell me if you do or do not eat fruits and if it is better to eat them at a certain time of the day?

I lost alot of weight on the OLD ATKINS diet in the late 70s, but am not that familiar with any of the new low carb diets.

thanks:confused:

In reply to your question about fruits and veggies, I can only answer for myself...many folks are following many different LC plans here and therefore I'm sure would have differing opinions...Myself am following the Protein Power Plan and therefore indulge in fruits that are low in carbs like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries etc. in moderation...in the veggie department, brocolli , cauliflower, turnip and green beans are a few I could suggest but the best thing to do is arm yourself with information in the way of a few LC books and check out the great informative info right here on this website...:) :) tips section for one comes to mind... member recipe section has some great recipes along with Karen's recipe section....spend a few moments perusing the site... lots of info for beginners... ;) Good luck and hope this has helped...

* Just anything else you'd like to share.

I've got a real feeling of relief & freedom from food now that I've found the LC WOE. Probably because I feel in control of food, rather than food & my appetite controlling me. Anyone else relate to this? hehe

Even when the scale seems stuck on a number, I'm not pressuring myself with the thoughts of "failing the diet" since this is truly a lifestyle change. Self-condemnation re weight & diet is such an easy trap for me to fall into (sigh) BUT now I can relax because I'll be eating this way for the rest of my life. Kudos & thanks to others who have shared about LC being a "life-style" not a diet, they have helped me to re-think food & diet then adopt this attitude.

Diabete report: sugars have come down below 7; for the 1st 8 weeks they were above 7 (without glyburide) and I wasn't comfortable with that. Whooo hooo. My old "bod" is becoming less insulin resistant. This is as big a milestone as losing 20 lbs :)

I've rambled on enough for now. Hope everyone is having a good day!

go on this diet. He even promised a whole new wardrobe at

buy him new pants! We are very pleased thus far with the results.
BTW- I checked out your recipes- I can't wait to try them- they sound yummy! Keep 'em coming!

Crowbear
Mon, Nov-05-01, 02:53
Well, introductions

Who am I? well that purely depends on the day, time and mood that I am in, been called many things some good and well some not so good (insert shocked look) The name that I post here is of course Crowbear, although I actually prefer "Bear" just cuz I have gotten used to that nickname. My real name is Matt. I am 34 and of course if I said "yes please" that would be construed as chavhanistic I would imagine :D so therefore I will add that I am male, although with the excersize and losing of weight that is happening it is throwing my hormones into high gear... but nuff said bout that (background noises of "chauvhanist" being said in whispers). I started LC in september of this year. I am divorced with a child who is in my custody and is turning 8 on Dec 25th. So I guess that kind of puts me in that "other" category (sees some knowing nods). I live in a town called Newberg it is about 25 miles south of Portland OR. Occupation... full time father, part time electronic technician, and all around daydreamer, and some dreams have come true, so no one can tell me that they don't. Already answered the question bout kids, I have a very loving and attention starved cat, and an annoying, but loving ferret. I am remaining on the induction part of the Atkins diet, it seems to be doing me the most amount of good, but would still love a visit from the whoosh fairy (hears something bout it taking years to get the weight on, must take a little while to take it off).

THE JUST FOR FUN PART

Steak done to a bloody rare (hears gagging sounds from the rear) hey, I have always said that you can just show the cow a flame and then bring it out....

Freshly baked sour dough bread (gives longing look toward San Francisco)

Pizza... got to have a pizza at least once a month... with the bread, I usually start off with the crust first.

I used to do 30 miles a day on my bike when I was going to school and it was an exhilarating experience, I want to be able to do that and be able to jog again.

I would love to be able to read books for a living, I love to read almost anything. have to add the anything just for the fact I have read some garbage that calls itself books, but knowledge even negative knowledge can be a good thing.

I would love to meet the Dalai Lamma.

I am currently reading whatever I can get my hands on, although I am writing my own novel.

Blade Runner is definately in my top 5 movies, along with Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The natural, Breakfast Club, and the Indianna Jones movies.

Anything else that I wish to share I will put in my journal :D

I've been lurking for a while, I'll admit. But I don't get a lot of time for the internet. I cannot recall anything that has had such a positive impact on my life as what switching to a low-carb lifestyle has done for me. I started in late march 2001, and since then have gone from 286lbs. to 204(this morning). My goal is to be about 185, or when my stomach is flat again. I've gone from a 44 inch jean to now a 34 inch. And of course, the blood pressure and cholesterol problems have vanished. I am still quite shocked as to how well I have done, considering my job as a long-haul truck driver.
