Hi all,

Grav here, checking in from New Zealand. Not many Kiwis around here it seems, and not many blokes either. Maybe I'm the only Kiwi bloke? vOv

I was recommended Tim Noakes' Banting diet in October last year after seeking some professional advice on exercise. Unexpectedly, I was told that given my genetic predisposition and that walking an hour a day for 6 months had barely changed anything, that I should focus on improving my diet instead. I was fiercely resistant at first with all the bad memories of unsuccessful diets I'd been put on while growing up, but eventually I decided that the only way to prove the guy wrong was to try it.

Best decision ever.

Since then I've lost 21kg/46lb in 20 weeks. I'm actually not 100% sure of what I'd like my final goal to be since I've never known what it's like to be at a "normal" weight, but maybe losing a total of around 45kg/100lb might be nice? For now I'm just content to keep dropping a kilo a week or thereabouts, and just enjoy the ride along the way.

In the meantime I've been looking up all the online resources I can find on the subject of LCHF, mostly in the form of YouTube videos. Today I stumbled on this site after a random Google search, and figured an LCHF forum would be a pretty good outlet for me to exchange some experiences, if nothing else to give my poor family/friends/colleagues a break from the subject.

So yeah, nice to meet you all, and looking forward to getting stuck in to this forum some more in the coming months. o7

Welcome Grav,
You have stumbled upon a long-standing low carb forum filled with 15 years of great information and inspiring success stories. You can search topics (use only the Advanced search button under the box) or read back through topics, recipes, or buddy groups...any type of support you need.
In NZ, have you found Prof Grant Schofield's page and the dietician Caryn Zinn?

http://profgrant.com
https://www.facebook.com/carynzinndietitian

Through them you should find more NZ and Aussie Low Carbers. Have you watched the YouTubes from LowCarbDown Under?
Oh, and for general health topics, one of my favorites is Tasmanian orthopedic surgeon Gary Fettke. Check out this Home Page: http://www.nofructose.com

I could go on, but you should check out what is here first! We do have some great blokes on this forum. Start with Ken's new post:

All the best,

Welcome, Grav. You have indeed arrived at an excellent place for information and inspiration for LCHF. Make yourself at home. You'll find plenty of other blokes.

As for me, I've long considered myself a Yankiwi, as we called ourselves when I was a student in NZ back in the day. I am having to miss my 50th (oh my!) class reunion at Lake Taupo at the moment. So sorry.

Best wishes.

Thanks Jey. Yes I have watched a few presentations by Caryn Zinn via Low Carb Down Under and I know of Grant Schofield as well. Currently I'm going through a Stephen Phinney phase; I like my videos with added science. :)

Great! You have found a home here.
Try Gary Fettke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPLZ0gbxBBQ&feature=youtu.be This is his cancer talk.
He has other topics here: http://www.nofructose.com/videos/
And some by other Aus/NZ speakers, e.g. Dr. Troy Stapleton, etc.

Some of my favorite sciencey but understandable talks are filmed by the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). In their many LC-themed talks, including one by Dr. Volek (co-author with Phinney)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8BY4fyLvZc , is one by Dr. Peter Attia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqwvcrA7oe8
He and Gary Taubes are now working at NUsi http://nusi.org
