is there anyway of getting some notification of replies to posts?

You can set your options to "subscribe" to any thread you post in by changing your options.
Go to your "User Control Panel" by clicking on "User CP" then select "edit options" then scroll down to the section called "Default Subscription Mode"
You can select from a set of options so that for each thread you have posted in you will get either instant notification each time someone posts or get a daily or weekly digest.

If you get fed up with getting lots of notifications you can reselect "do not subscribe" at any time.

You can also subscribe/unsubscribe to any thread on the forums by clicking in the "Thread Tools" arrow at the top of it and selecting "subscribe/unsubscribe to this thread".
