Hi, I am new here and am very confused with carb counting, etc. I am not on any medication for diabetes. I had a double lung transplant in nov,.2007, which I am now rejecting and back on oxygen 24/7. Its okay as i had a great 3 yrs and no regrets. but I got an 8.5 A1c test and my primary dr. is checking to see if it has to do with some mega doses of steroids that i had to take due to my rejection. my sister is diabetic, takes metformin, and won't give up white bread or anything else white. She is actually doing good and her numbers stay down most of the time.
So I do believe that the steroids caused my blood sugar rise, BUT you never know. the thing is, I don't know where to start. I had a tiny session with the nurse at the office, and a cook book but I cannot seem to be faithful on checking my blood sugar every day and then I don't make a conscious effort to eat right. any advise? thx, joyceg :q:

As I've been asking everyone else, what are you calorie percentages of fat/protein/carbohydrates? What is your caloric intake each day?
The most common mistake for people on low-carb is not eating enough fat. When in doubt, eat more fat! A ribeye steak has twice as much fat (by weight) as it does protein. So eating lots of fat isn't as challenging as it seems.
What are your meals like?

Even if you don't follow a specific plan, there are some sensible guidelines:
Avoid processed, chemically altered oils: corn oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or any other trans fats.
Saturated animal fat is your friend. Eat plenty of it. Have butter, cook your eggs in bacon grease.
Plant-based oils that are okay to eat: coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, almond oil.
Restrict your carb intake to less than 10% of your calories.
Abstain from alcohol of any kind especially if you have a hard time losing weight.
Hope this all helps :-)

I'm not sure about your condition, but I do know that steroids will cause your BS to be elevated.
