Evensong

Greetings, all. I'm Evensong, and I'm a new Low Carber.
I'm a diabetic who had good blood glucose control for 10 years with oral medication. The weight was not so good, but it was pretty consistent. The last two years, after a disastrous fall and some surgery, my weight got even higher than it had been, and I developed sensitivity to some of the meds. (Bad side effects, and totally unable to tolerate the drug in any form.) Despite taking other types of meds, the BG shot up, the weight was causing problems, and my Dr. started pushing gastric bypass.
After investigating the WLS, and talking to some survivors, I keep coming back to the idea that I just don't hate myself enough to suffer through the surgery only to live life the way those people do, only to have MORE surgery to have excess skin removed. No offense to anyone who has gone this route (I do know people who have had good outcomes) but I just feel very strongly it is the wrong path for me.
My husband, the Big Guy, has lost 50+ pounds since last August on a kind of modified Atkins program. (He has the most amazing willpower!) He never nagged or preached at me, but he did offer several times to help me out. I just never felt like Atkins was right for me; I hated the idea of giving up anything. But when my Dr. made the referral, I knew I had to do something. After doing more research, I dug out the Eades' book that I had bought over a year ago, and started reading.
I started the eating plan 4 days ago, gradually dropping the carb count each day. I'm keeping a food diary on my iPhone using a program that keeps track of nutrients for me. I can't say I've been hungry, because I eat whenever I feel like it, but I have had carb cravings. (I have been a Coca-Cola addict for some time. :help: ) My BG readings had been falling, but shot up dramatically today, for no earthly reason that I can imagine.
I have some weird food issues, in that I can't tolerate soy protein, many artificial sweeteners, and certain preservatives. Exercise is problematic, as I have fibromyalgia and arthritis in my hips, but I'm pretty determined to lose weight and lower that BG. Anybody who has any suggestions or experience with any of my dilemmas?
Just for the record, I'm in my 50's, have 3 grown kids who don't live with us, and work in a sedentary job. Thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences.
