Okay, a few years ago I had a partial hyst. I still have my ovaries. I'm in my mid-forties though, so who knows if they're functioning... but if they are...

Do others like me still get ups in their weight on a monthly cycle? Do you have PMS?

Just wonderin'. I never suffered from PMS before I had the hyst (or rather, my husband never suffered) so I can't tell by mood.

I would imagine that if the ovaries are still in place, all the monthly hormone cycles are still occurring. There's just no period to let you know what's going on. There's no reason to assume that in the mid-40's the ovaries aren't functioning.

I think that way, too... I guess I wouldn't have the thickening of the walls thing that adds to the water gain... but must be all over water, too...

I've searched around and nothing really tells me. My doctor actually shrugged... that was informative.

Hi - I also had a partial hysterectomy last year (kept ovaries) and yep - still get PMS and feel like I get my "phantom" period. Bloated, cranky, you know the drill.......Hope you're well....:)

I had the same op four years ago when I was 36. I have my ovaries.

I notice cyclical changes in wt and water retention on and off. Not evey month because I am perimeno and have been since I was 32. My SO says I still do the mood swing thing - do I believe him? LOL

Bottom line is - your ovaries "go to sleep" for a while after a hyst (they're in shock) and then they wake up again and stay that way until when you would have gone into perimeno when you do all the weird things perimeno women do.

Thanks Julie... after looking at my weight stats... I can see little blips corresponding to a 4-week cycle. Man, I truly overthink all of this and need reasons behind every scale variation..

Someone please, pass me a life.

You should check with your gyno doc-you're at the age for perimenopause or menopause. :D

If you have both ovaries, yes, you are likely having PMS symptoms. They do keep working.

In some, like me, when only 1 ovary is left, the second one shuts down shortly after surgery....and stays that way. Not sure of the percentage, but it's not uncommon. My doc warned me prior to surgery and sure enough, within 6 months the one left had shut down...."full blown menopause" is what the nurse told me!

There is a blood test that is done to check for menopause. Can't remember the name of it, but if your levels of something is over a certain level, you're in menopause/the ovaries have shut down. Talk to your doc, but I think you're young enough that you'll continue with symptoms until your 50s. You may find more irregularities since the surgery....or different symptoms....but that's more likely your age, not the surgery. Talk to your doc....sounds like you weren't given enough info prior to surgery.

I guess there are some women who get into peri-menopausal symptoms in their mid-40s, but I still buy the big boxes of tampons... Worst comes to worst, I'll donate the remainder to the thrift shop but I haven't quit yet.

There's so much press about peri-menopause that I think we anticipate it, but the fact that cycles change and our risks of challenging pregnancies skyrocket after 40 doesn't mean it's all about to be over.
