Hi Everyone
I just found this website and hoped it would help as I am just about ready to give up. I have maintained the same weight give or take a few pounds for 20 years, since I found the Atkins diet, but I quit smoking in Jan and I gained over 20 pounds in a very short time. I feel worse than I have felt in 20 years and the fact that I have only lost 2 lbs since February is making it hard to stick to the diet and the not smoking. I realize the nicotine was helpful in keeping the weight down and digestion and metabolism, but I thought after a month or two my body would adjust. Anyone been through this? :help:

Welcome to the forums..
I can imagine that you are discouraged but dont give up..But Congrats on quitting the cig habit..That is a feat in itself. First off..it is normal to gain weight when you stop smoking..You might want to write down some of your menus and let other ppl see what you are eating..Are you eating enough? drinking enough water? getting enough protein? exercising? so many factors fall into this...Plus I see you are short and really aren't that heavy so it might take you a little longer..Plus you dont have your age so I dont know if that could be a factor..Give yourself a pat on the back by stopping smoking..It will do wonders for your health
You might want to consider starting a journal as well so other ppl can come in and give advice and internet friendship..
Take it in stride..as long as you are eating healthy/exercising/drinking your water..It will come..
Best of luck to ya
P.S..I just looked at your plan and you are doing well in your carbs area which is below 20 for induction level..But look at your calories..You aren't even eating 1000 calories..Your metabolism will slow down if you dont feed it enough. Try upping your calories along with keeping the cals low..You have to eat to loose weight..Been there done that..

Hi Judy and welcome to the LC forum.
First I have to congratulate you on being a non-smoker, I quit in December and know what a BIG job that was for you to do. I read that eliminating nicotine causes an gain of 20 pounds because of the way it stimulates the body. So what you are experiencing is typical, even though not welcomed.
I was looking at your MY PLAN and see that you may want to up your fat intake to increase weight loss on LC WOE. Especially if you use fats like Coconut oil it will speed up your metabolism. Read Atkins info on fat intake, it will help you lose weight.
Info about coconut oil and weight loss (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=326407)
The other thing is that if you aren't losing weight to stay off the artificial sweeteners and other LC foods like the Bryers. They can cause you to stall. They can trigger an insulin release which throws you out of ketosis. They cause some people to start sugar cravings again.
Dr Atkins also says that caffiene causes an insulin relsease which is also throwing you out of ketosis.
Atkins and other LC experts say to always eat protien and fat with your carbs. That way you will stay in ketosis and not get a spike in blood sugar.
Are you using ketostix to see if you're staying in ketosis all day?
You can do it, hang in there Judy! :agree:

(((Hugs))) & Hi Judy! OMG, can I feel your pain. I quit smoking in October and I was already battling my weight at that time. Now, it's even harder. I did a LOT of research when I quit smoking because I was a *hard core*smoker. I smoked up to 2-1/2 packs a days for 34 years. So, needless to say, when I quit, it threw my system into quite a quandry. Most of what I learned is that it basically takes your system about 6 months to *re-adjust* to being a non/ex-smoker.
Hang in there! You have done a wonderful thing by giving up smoking. The weight will come off; just give it time. That's what I'm doing.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I have never had this much trouble losing weight, and it is really coloring my world very grey. Possibly it is due to stopping smoking. I really had expected to feel better not worse. I posted todays meals. Thanks for the info on the Breyers. I have read and re read all labels and have a good handle on the carb values. Maybe someone can see something I am not doing right. I gained another pound today. Thanks for your support it really helps as I am tetering on the edge of going back to smoking just to feel better

Welcome, Judy! You really can do this, hon! You're just a "turtle," like me! We have to be a little more patient, but the weight does come off, so hang in there! :bhug: :bhug: :bhug:
Kudos to you for quitting! Jill

Went to the Doctor today and found I was having a colitis flare, so hopefully getting this under control and getting back on the patch for a slower nicotine weaning will help me start losing
