Metformin does lower blood sugar and that is the primary reason that it is prescribed; it works by lowering insulin resistance so the body can better utilize its own insulin and by lowering the amount of glucose produced in the liver. Metformin is also often prescribed for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) because that is often associated with insulin resistance and diabetes.
