Hi! I thought I'd share some information regarding herbal hypoglycemics. I am currently taking approximately 6 grams of fenugreek each day. Fenugreek is an ancient herb with a very high degree of safety. It helps sensitize your cells to glucose, and is an effective diabetes management tool. I use it so that any carbs I consume are more "welcome" at the cellular level.

Fenugreek is very well-known as a galactagogue; that is, it increases milk production. Breastfeeding women use it, as do dairy farmers. It is a mild laxative. It can cause uterine contractions, so pregnant women should avoid it.

The ground seeds are much more potent than the extract. You can pick it up at a healthfood store for about $7-8 (US$) for 100 capsules -- the dosage ranges from 2-4 capsules per day (or 2-6 grams per day.)

Here are some links:

In addition to helping control blood glucose, fenugreek also lowers LDL cholesterol, and has a reputation for being an aphrodesiac. It is also believed to increase breast size and firmness, even in non-nursing women. (It is sold by some companies as a breast-enhancer.)

I have found that I can increase my carb intake slightly while still remaining in ketosis since I added fenugreek to my regime.
