The scoop and remember these are quotes from OTHER sources...

#1
ERYTHRITOL is a 4 carbon "sugar" that is about 70% as sweet as sucrose, but it looks and cooks like sucrose with no aftertaste and supplies only about 0.2 Calorie per gram! Essentially none! It has a pleasant cooling effect in the mouth and ranks a zero on the glycemic index. Presently a sensation in Japan, it is only just being introduced in the USA. Can not be used by harmful bacteria or yeast in the mouth or gut. Rated GRAS by the FDA

Tru-Sweet (erythritol sweetener)
There is nothing else on the market like this great new sugar alcohol which is truly zero carb! It is granular like sugar, not fluffy, no aspartame, no fillers, all natural, and tastes just like sugar! There is no better sweetener on the market today! It's pricey, because it's imported from the one factory in the world which is located in Italy. It's so good, though, that major soft drink companies (the Big "P") and major candy companies (S n' L) are switching to it in many of their products. Look for it to hit the market in a BIG way! If you are looking for perfect baked good--try this one! It measures cup for cup like sugar, but is slightly less sweet.

VERY INTERESTING but it's a sugar alcohol, like Sorbitol, Xylitol, Maltitol, Lactitol and all those other - - -OL(s) so:

:( the Calorie Count Per Serving divided by 4 (or use the Tools:Hidden Carb Calculator) will give the true carb count (CANNOT just deduct like with fiber grams); the carb count may be low but it's NOT zero, 1/2 Cup used in baking would equal 24 Teaspoons or 19.2 calories or 4.8 grams total net carbs!

:( the gastrointestinal side-effects (read: possible cramps, diarrhea) may surprise those sensititive to sugar alcohols, and sugar alcohols will halt ketosis for some folks. Use with caution and if it doesn't affect you in any way :) lucky you!

In other words, check out Doreen's excellent summary of sweeteners, including all sugar alcohols, even this Erythritol. See the quick link over on the right "The Truth About low carb sweeteners info".

Hope this helps!
