Hi everyone.

I found this board last night (going through all of the posts has been fun!) and decided to join. Although my husband is very supportive, he's 6'4 and has a metabolism that makes me curse my DNA... so it's nice to have a place to come to where people have truly been in the same sort of place that I have.

I realize this board is mainly Atkins, but due to some kidney function issues discovered when I was pregnant (more on that in a moment... I have some damage due to reflux nephropathy (http://health.yahoo.com/health/ency/adam/000459) that I had as a child) I thought South Beach might be a better choice for me, as I don't have to limit my carb intake as strictly as I would on Atkins induction.

I finally decided I was going to make this change after my miscarriage one week before Christmas. I realize it wasn't caused by anything I did, and it may be that my kidneys couldn't handle the extra workload, but it really made me take a hard look. (The doctors said my kidneys work at a quite fine level to support just me, but with the extras from the baby... they were going to be testing my kidney function at least once a month if I hadn't miscarried.) However I know I just wasn't as healthy as I should have been. My hope is not just to get me into a cuter body (not that I'll mind if that happens) -- I really want to maximize my health and try to take some of the strain of my heart and kidneys.

My doc is okay with this, and has encouraged me to pull the weight off. My goal is set at 150 because that's my doctor recommended goal. However, I think I could be quite happy at a strong, toned 175.

I'm looking forward to reading more posts and cheering on everyone's progress.

Welcome to the boards! I've been here a few times and just restarted my weightloss again this weekend. If you need a little goal to work towards, check out the 'new years to valentines challenge' somewhere on the boards. We started charting this weekend, but I'm sure they would let you on board. Good luck in your weightloss and I hope to chat soon!

Feel free to visit my journal to chat.
