Hi

I just discovered this site by accident! All the information out there is confusing me :exclm:

Anyway all I want to know is how to start simply, I dont want to do Atkins or anything just basically low carb in conjuction with exercise.

I am not a breakfast person so grilling rashers and doing eggs first thing does not appeal to me - I would be more happy with yogurt and some nuts.


How many carbs are we allowed generally in a day and do you find getting low carb foods difficult in Ireland

I know Im asking a lot but I just want to start simply to simply lose some weight.

Hi!

you'll find your tolerance for carbs is a very individual thing. I started with atkins but now "do my own thing" as I now work out regularly and feel better with some good carbs. I avoid white bread, sugar and potatoes. I eat lots of vegs & fruits (low glycemic ones like blueberries, rasp. etc) But there are a lot of good low carb products in the states that you might not have access to yet (like low carb ketatoes (mash potatoe flakes) low carb cereal, chocolate etc.) So my advice would be to stick to low glycemic carbs (slower to digest carbs don't spike insulin) Brown soda bread, sugar free yogart, nuts, whole grains etc. Also the more you exercise, the greater your tolerence. I have gone from very slow walking to jogging a couple of miles a day and can eat 100grams of carbs and STILL be in Ketosis (fat burning mode)! Good luck and keep educating yourself - low carb is a wonderful way of life! How are things in Ireland? Used to live in Naas, Co. Kildare for a few years (hubby's family is from Sligo) I miss the people, pubs and ocean (but not the high prices!)

thanks for all the info! Ireland is well gone crazy - our govertment is awful, corruption is rife and the cost of living increases daily. As for the pubs well there is a smoking ban coming in - in about January February so thats going to be fun to watch.

Hi Helen:

Welcome!

I live in Dublin, but I am orginally from the States.

Even if you don't want to "do" atkins, I think that reading the book will give you a lot of information (even the website atkins.com) as to the "how" and "why" of low carbing. You might want to give the Induction phase a go too. It is a good way to "detox" and start from scratch.

Hi To You All In Low Carb World,i Have Been On Atkins For 6 Weeks Now And Lost 9lbs In The First 2 Weeks Then Nothing For Almost 4 Weeks And Now I Seem To Be 0n The Move Again So To Speak!,i Went Into My Local Health Food Shop Yesterday And A Bar Called "myoplex".the Chap In The Shop Said It Was A Low Carb Bar As It Says "3G"IMPACT CARBS, I THOUGHT THIS IS GREAT A CHOCOLATE DIPPED NUTRITION FOR ONLY 3 CARBS, THEN I LOOKED AT THE BACK OF THE PACKET AND SAW 23G PER BAR!. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE EXPLAIN WHAT IMPACT CARBS AS I FELT LIKE IMPACTING ON SOMEONE AFTER BEING SO GOOD ABOUT MY CARB INTAKE, AND ALSO BECAUSE THE SHOP WAS SELLING THESE BARS IN RESPONSE TO ALL THE LOW CARB DIETS SUCH AS ATKINS AND I THOUGHT GREAT, I DO NOT HAVE TO ORDER STUFF IN FROM U.S.A..

Hi!

Don't worry! Impact carbs are the ones that "impact" your blood sugar and cause a raise in Insulin (fat storing/appetite increasing hormone) Other carbs which could be from sugar alcohols (like malitol) or fiber carbs do not affect your blood sugar and shouldn't interfere with weight loss! (oh and glycerine in red wine accounts for it's carbs but glycerine is another "non-impact" carb thank god!)

Congrats on finding this forum, I've found it great. can't believe I haven't been fired I spend so much time here.
I would agree that even if you don't want to do Atkins that you should read a book and let it be you're bible. It's best to get youre head around the idea as simply as possible before all the nonsense some people spout tears you in every direction. When your more confident with it then tweak it, but you hear of people on "modified Atkins" who've never read the book and are telling people they eat sugar on their cereal??? If you start off confused you'll find it hard to stick to it.
The first book I read was Dr Clarkes New protein diet and I would recommend it highly. He's English (I think) and very down to earth.
You will find it hard to get low carb products but easy to get low carb food- ie everywhere sells salads, have the meat dish and get salad instead of chips/potatoes. Snacks are peanuts and cheese strings (after induction) instead of chocolate.
Be wary of the myoplex, I may have read the nutritional info wrong but I remember I found some reason to leave them on the shelf. For a treat try Nitro-tech from the same shelf, super expensive €5 and a bit odd but low ecc. Also a good tip is Boot's diabetic chocolate. Full of sugar alcohols so don't eat too much, trust me.
