I have been trying to eliminate yeast for about three weeks and as a vegetarian it is so hard (actually I know this is incredibly hard if you are a non-veggie too!) I have seen here and there mentions that soy should be avoided, if that is the case i don't know what I'll do. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 yrs. I started the Atkins plan about 14 mo ago. I had reached my goal but still went up and down. I admitted carbs were my problem and have found I am much more satisfied with my food since I am on lower carbs. I notice you are not following any particular plan. Who says to avoid soy? I use a lot of soy meat substitutes. It is not easy doing Atkins the vegetarian way. I eat no meat and no eggs, but do use dairy products. It has worked well for me. There is a low carb vegetarian forum here that you might want to visit.

Hi there Collette;

Just a small long-winded note, saga, small drama, hee! hee! But if you are on the Candida diet this is what I went through getting the yeast out of my diet, it was difficult but as mem 2 i.e. Mary said "Soy is definitely okay"...

I suffered with Candida for years but I never knew it, but it wasn't until I saw a Naturopath for another ongoing disease which almost killed me; but anyway she said that I had Candida really bad; and at the time I had never heard of such a thing. My symptoms were vomiting, swollen tummy, itching, thrush, you name it; I had it etc, etc, etc!!

So her remedy was tea tree oil and a herbal concoction but you would DEFINITELY need to see a practising Naturopath who deals only with herbal remedies, particulary in using tea tree oil as it needs to be monitored, like only a recognised Naturopath is able to do this but I tell you it sure worked with me and I have been Candida free for six years now...

I was told to stay off all citrus fruits, sugars of any kind, alcohol except white wine and gin but anything that contained sugars, i.e. breads, pastries, beers, which are all full of yeast!! Also to stay of fruits like mangoes or the very sugary types but interestingly enough she said not to eat rockmelons because of the mould factor so I stayed off that as well. Mushrooms was another vegetable because it was from the fungal family i.e. fungas, mould...

The little yeasties or Candida as we know it just love sugar in any form and the more sugar you eat the more you are feeding those little yeasties; it's that simple...

Canida looks like little mushrooms inside one's gullet. There's a very good book called "It could be Allergy and it can be cured" by Phillip Alexander ISBN O 64618119 X, that's the book that actually has the pictures of candida in it...

My Naturopath also advised me to buy organic meats and free range chicken and eggs.

She also said to wash everything before you eat it, why; because everything has mould on it and mould is an extension of those little yeasties. What amazed me was that I said I washed my fruit before I refridgerated it and she said because the fridge was cold it caused dampness which then encouraged more mould or bacteria to grow back onto the fruit so it needed to be washed again before you consumed it, so yeah; lots to consider about Candida or yeast!!

Also bathrooms and wet areas, old buildings all have mould; so that could be another attributing factor as well.

At first I found this all very hard to accept so I actually got a second opinion and the second Naturopath made the exact same comments.

But anyway once I started with the treatment I couldn't get over how well I became and I was pain free for a year.

Unfortunately my Candida symptoms came back a year ago so I was advised by My Doctor to see a Medical allergy specialist (a Specialist Doctor) straight away to get to the bottom of this Candida scenario and I did. I am very allergic to yeast and moulds...

So now I am now currently being desensitized with weekly needles for moulds, yeasts, pollens etc, etc and thankfully it's beginning to work.

Have you had an allergy test by chance to see if it is actually yeast you are allergic too or perhaps it could be something else, might be worth looking into perhaps?

I weighed a 156lbs at the time of being diagnosed with Candida and after following the candida (low carb) diet, I lost so much weight. I went down to 112lbs in less than a year. The Candida diet, taking into consideration I'm a vegetarian 98% of the time consisted of seeds, avocados, bananas, nuts, soy milk, tofu, green vegetables, not the coloured ones, omit potatoes and all sweet veggies but green coloured fruits like kwiwi, green apples, herbal teas, plenty of water etc, etc were allowed.

But it was definitely alright to use soy milk and tofu; in fact I was encouraged by my Naturopath here Australia, I couldn't imagine my life without my soy products it's the mainstay of my diet...

It's funny, laugh, laugh; coz I have only just joined the forum and I've been asking heeeeeeeeps of questions because I am very knew to the the Atkin's forum and this low carb diet and since responding to your query about soy milk i.e. having too much sugars etc, etc, I have just answered my own series of questions!!

Doreen was kind enough to pass on some great advice because I panicked about this new Low Carb regime so if she reads this little reply she will smile about it; I'm sure...

So it's back to the Candida diet for me which is basically the Low Carb diet anyway, which is quite funny, so with a little luck on my side I should breeze through all of this!!

So maybe it was fate Collette i.e.posting your message, gave me the answers I needed; so I should say 'thank you".

Good luck Collette...
