Olive Oil Helps Americans Reduce Risks of Heart Disease

Monounsaturated Fats Stressed in New Cholesterol Guidelines
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2001--In the wake of the recent announcement by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) that a greatly increased number of Americans are at risk of having a heart attack, people will be seeking new ways to lower their risk status -- especially through dietary changes, weight reduction and exercise.

New guidelines issued by the National Cholesterol Education Program panel of the NHLBI recommend that 20% of total calories should come from monounsaturated fat, such as that found in olive oil, and only 7% from saturated fat. To lower your risk for heart disease, the panel said it is essential to reduce the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet, and encourage moderate exercise.

According to Dr. Barbara Levine, a leading nutrition expert at the Rockefeller University Human Nutrition Program, replacing cooking fats and oils with olive oil is a good first step. ``Over 50 percent of us (almost 100 million Americans) have borderline high cholesterol and are currently at risk of developing heart disease, so it makes sense to eat a heart-healthy diet -- one that is low in saturated fat and high in fiber.'' said Dr. Levine.

Olive oil has been shown in many scientific studies to have cholesterol-lowering properties, and it is very easily incorporated into everyday American meals. It is predominately a monounsaturated fat, which is effective in lowering the risk of heart disease due to protective high-density components in the oil carrying cholesterol fragments away thus reducing plaque in the arteries.

If you think you are at risk, Dr. Levine recommends asking your physician to conduct a complete blood lipid examination to reveal triglyceride (blood fats) levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or ``bad'') cholesterol levels.
