Hello group, I have been getting any exercise and now my
weight loss is slowing down. I am thinking about getting
me a recumbant bike for exercise. I need advise on whether
you think this would be plausible for me because of my
heavy weight
(329)? Any pros/cons about recumbant bikes?
Thanks, Loretta Started Atkins 8/7/02

I don't have a recumbent exercise bike, but I do have a
regular recumbent bike, and I absolutely love it. Wish I'd
gotten one years ago. The seat is so comfortable, and I think
the pedal angle is kinder on the knees. If you get one with a
full seatback, it's also easier on your back.
Try to take a lengthy "test drive" on any bike (exercise or
regular) you get. Or at least buy it from a store with a good
return policy, in case you decide it's not right for you.

Based on my experience, I'd say go for it as far as weight is
concerned. I used to weight 367 and had no problems riding a
regular stationary bike. Recumbents (I assume you mean
stationary) are even easier on the butt, but I do find that I
feel a little bit uncomfortable on them because my stomach
gets in the way more on them than on a regular bike -- because
of where your legs go. I would suggest you try to find one say
at a bike shop before you purchase.

Yes, I ride a recumbent stationary and have spent over 2 hours
on it pedaling away. I find it to be very comfortable. You may
want to buy one of the better makes such as a Precor. I have
had to replace a few things on mine in the 2 1/2 years I have
owned it. If you want an inexpensive one, you can buy the one
that I have from Sports Authority or online:

And here are some other choices, some with reviews

While you are at it, if you don't have anything to amuse you
while pedaling, you might want to buy a small television and
maybe a VCR and watch a movie while pedaling.
Good luck! Dan
