Hi Erica, I'm not an expert, but someone who suffered a long
time from heartburn and acid reflux, and finally had to make
some dietary changes. I haven't had any heartburn in several
months now, and I just can't believe it. The three biggest
things I eliminated are coffee, sugar and chocolate.
(sigh..........) However, I feel fantastic.

I searched a while back on this very topic and found a few
very good websites....however no one totally agrees on
everything....although basically green vegetables are the
best. One of my favorite summer foods, watermelon, is
excellent. Also celery or parsley are very good for an
acid attack.

Good luck - I'm interested in what others have to say... gina

Hi,

I had great results with my acid reflux after nearly 4 years
of taking prilosec and than that stopped working.

For 6 weeks, I gave up coffee, tomatoes/tomato based
products, chocolate, wheat based products, butter, dairy
(which I never really ate anyway). I limited my eating
routine to millet, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, almond milk,
salmon nearly nightly cooked totally plain (delicious wild
alaskan salmon), steamed vegetables, lots of water, and I
discovered a product called Glutagenics byu Metagenics made
from glutamine, licorice and aloe that replaced prilosec and
after about 3-4 weeks of really keeping true to this routine,
in addition to losing a bunch of weight, my acid reflux got
waaaaaaaaay better and now after about 2 months is still a
scary memory nonetheless I havent needed to even take the
Glutagenics any more.

Does the original poster want to alkalinise the body, or
counteract too much acid production in the stomach?

To effectively reduce chronic stomach acid problems, an H2
histamine antagonist is the go. Zantac?

To alkalinise the body (you should only do this under medical
supervision for a specific reason) potassium citrate/ sodium
bicarbonate solution is often used.

I would have thought that a normal varied diet in a normal
individual, would have very little effect on the body's pH.

Thanks, Ken --- I forgot to mention dairy!

I do have some lapses, but now don't get a burning reaction
when I ocasionally cheat.

This whole concept of alkalizing/acidifying the body confuses
me. The bicarbonate buffer system totally regulates blood pH.
What else is there to consider?
